CR Speed Secure2 Retention Holster and EDC Carry Belt—Gear Review

In the USA, CR Speed may be best known for its championship-winning IPSC competition race holsters. CR Speed’s parent company, Rescomp Handgun Technologies of South Africa, also manufactures the Secure2 series of duty holsters and EDC belts that are suitable for Duty, concealed carry and IDPA competition. As an occasional IDPA competitor, I was very interested in comparing the CR Speed rig with the gear I currently use for IDPA matches. Can a retention holster really be as fast as a standard holster without retention? I couldn’t wait to find out.

The Secure2 retention holster is molded from high-grade glass-filled nylon. Unlike Kydex holsters, the nylon material is less temperature sensitive and will not warp or melt if exposed to high temperatures that your holster may encounter if you accidentally leave your gear bag in the trunk, or remove your holster and leave it in the car for a few hours. The holster bodies provided for review fit all the medium-size Glock frames as well as the Beretta 92 series. Additional models are available for the CZ 75, and Beretta PX4 Storm.

The retention system of the Secure2 holster is a patented auto-locking mechanism that activates when the pistol is inserted into the holster. As the pistol is holstered, a spring-loaded lever hooks over the trigger guard of the pistol with a loud click that can be heard even when wearing ear plugs and muffs. When the pistol is secured in the holster, the thumb latch will retain it in the holster until it released with the thumb latch or the pistol is pulled with over 200 pounds of force. Trying as hard as I could, I couldn’t separate the pistol and holster without activating the thumb latch. I found it to be amazingly strong and secure.

The Secure2 holster body is molded from glass-filled nylon and features recessed hardware and an ample sight channel.

My interest in using the holster for competition compelled me to comparison test the Secure2 holster against another holster that does not have active retention. As I started to practice with the Secure2 holster, I was impressed by the positioning of the thumb release and the ease of activation. I set up an impromptu shoot-off between the Secure2 holster and my current holster. My shot timer confirmed that the Secure2 holster wasn’t adding a significant amount of time to my draw. With more practice, I feel the Secure2 holster could be as fast as my current competition holster.

With a retail price of $48.00, the Secure2 holster is a very good value as compared to other holsters with similar features. The modular construction of the holster allows for a wide range of flexibility with regard to belt mounts and pistol models that will work with the holster. The holster is also fully guaranteed against breakage. While the Secure2 model may be new, the holster design has been used as a duty holster for many years, with some holsters in service for over 10 years.

The CR Speed EDC (every day carry) Belt is a variation of the CR Speed Hi-Torque Range Belt. The EDC Belt maintains the stability and weight-bearing features of the dual-belt Hi-Torque system, but does it in a single belt. As the name implies, the belt is suitable for every day wear for those that carry in a belt-secured holster or just want to wear a cool-looking belt. The belt is also ideal for IDPA competition. I used the belt with the Secure2 holster and found that it provided a very stable platform for the holster as well as my additional magazine pouches.

A key feature of the Secure2 holster is the spring-loaded release lever that secures the pistol in the holster by locking over the trigger guard.

Instead of a buckle, the EDC Belt has a generous nine inches of Velcro that secures the overlapping ends of the belt. A CR Speed logo belt keeper is provided with the belt and wraps around the overlapped section to securely hold the layers in place. CR Speed uses a non-aggressive Velcro that’s softer and less abrasive on the skin. They call it the “Shooter-friendly Velcro System”. I’ve had body parts rubbed raw by harsh Velcro on other products, so I really appreciated the difference in the Velcro.

The EDC Belt retails for $39.95 and is available in sizes ranging from 28” to 60”. As with most belts that will be used for competition, you will probably want to add 2” to your current waist size to allow room for mag pouches and the holster belt hanger.

I was very impressed with the Secure2 holster and EDC belt. The quality of both items is outstanding, and they worked together perfectly. From my experiences, the Secure2 holster delivered the benefit of retention without slowing down the act of drawing the pistol. After doing some quick comparison shopping against other similar IDPA competition belts and holsters, the CR Speed items are attractively priced. I’m looking forward to continuing training with the Secure2 holster and EDC belt. I will be using both in future IDPA matches.
