The Surprising Survival Rifle: Henry's AR-7--Review

The Surprising Survival Rifle: Henry’s AR-7–Review

{ 103 comments }

When I think of the Henry brand, I don’t typically think about survival rifles. The company is much more well known for their lever-action powerhouses. But Henry makes other things, too, and the U.S. Survival Rifle, or AR-7, is a winner. It is compact, practical, and the AR-7’s accuracy will make you think twice about your go-to rimfire rifle.

The BAR, and its derivatives, never really caught on with civilian shooters. Maybe .30-06 was too expensive. Or maybe the guns were just too big. There’s more steel in a BAR than there is in an F-150. But there are still shooters, like me, who want a BAR, and Ohio Ordnance Works is filling that demand.

Heard of the movie “Inception”? Well, this is DemolitionRanch’s version of that, as he describes it, “A shell within a shell within a shell.”

Parallax Tactical's Long Slim Forends

Parallax Tactical’s Long Slim Forends

Parallax Tactical is gaining momentum with the black rifle crowd. I found them the old fashioned way, by discovering I needed something, and then searching out the solution. Regular readers may have heard me bitch about my simian build. I’m tall. Not freakishly so, but 6’4″. Those of you who can sympathize will know what a pain in the ass it can be. I don’t fit in foreign cars. Flying is a grotesque comedy, and carbine length AR-15s too often feel like toys. I have long monkey arms, and need a long length of pull. While Parallax hasn’t solved the LOP issue, they do make a great forend that is changing the way I think about the AR.

MP-5 Clone from Pakistan - Pakistani Ordnance Factory’s POF-5

MP-5 Clone from Pakistan – Pakistani Ordnance Factory’s POF-5

The POF-5 may look like your run-of-the-mill MP5 knock-off, but it isn’t. These economical imports are versatile contenders. We’ve put 4,000 rounds through these two with only 5 hiccups. Even when they’re filthy, they keep kicking out brass (and steel). They’re pistols, but a simple arm brace makes them even more effective. Check out our review.

VTAC Brokos Belt--What’s under your bed when the Revolution starts?

VTAC Brokos Belt–What’s under your bed when the Revolution starts?

Less than a decade ago the standard for military assaulters was a 2.5 inch thick super stiff belt, to which you attached your pistol and pistol mags. Usually with duct tape. They were heavy, uncomfortable, and had a bad habit of rubbing your body raw when you wore them over 2 hours. In short, they sucked, but they were all we had. You don’t know what you are missing until you get an awesome piece of gear. And the VTAC Brokos is that.
