So in a nutshell, all of the reasons to carry the XD-E I might not necessarily agree with. Some of them don’t apply to me specifically. But I can understand why they were done.

M&P-10 Sport – Bargain Bin Price That Is Big On Performance.
Published: March 1, 2018 { 40 comments }I must confess that sometimes I am a bit of a gun snob, especially as it relates to rifles. I don’t have any full custom second mortgage guns, but I generally look well above the price point of the M&P 10 that came in for review this week. As a retired military sniper and [...]
Ruger LC9s Pro – Small Enough to Carry, Big Enough to Shoot
Published: February 28, 2018 { 34 comments }First and foremost, because it is small. Beyond small – it’s tiny. The LC9s Pro is what I would categorize as a micro-9. Its dimensions are literally just enough to handle the size of the cartridge and pressures created and nothing more. This makes the pistol incredibly concealable.
Engineering Around Genius: Winchester’s Forgotten 1911 SL
Published: February 27, 2018 { 17 comments }Way back when, “A man’s word was his bond.” But in 1901 the bond between two powerhouses in the firearms industry was broken. T.G. Bennet, President of Winchester, and John M. Browning had come to an impasse over how JMB would be compensated for his latest creation: the Auto 5 shotgun.
Built for Speed – Canik TP9 SFx Full Review
Published: February 26, 2018 { 19 comments }Review of the Canik TP9 SFx pistol. The TP9 SFx was ready to go right out of the box for Production Division or Carry Optics Division with the addition of a red dot optic. In the future, if I decide to switch divisions, or stop competing in USPSA matches, the TP9 SFx could fill a home defense role.
Sabatti Rover Tactical – A .308 Powerhouse w/ Unique Multi-Radial Rifling — Full Review
Published: February 23, 2018 { 21 comments }Sabatti is a new brand to me, though it is far from new to firearms. They have been in the gun business for 400 years, an unbroken line of smiths from father to son, with no interruptions. That is a pretty big deal considering most of us, me included, couldn’t tell you how exactly our ancestors arrived on the continent.
MilSurp: British Infantry Weapons of World War II: The Tools Tommies Used to Beat Back the Bosche
Published: February 21, 2018 { 72 comments }On the night of June 5th, 1944, a force of 181 men commanded by Major John Howard lifted off from RAF Tarant Rushton aboard six Horsa gliders. Their force consisted of a reinforced company from the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry along with twenty sappers drawn from the Royal Engineers. Their objective was to seize the bridge over the Caen Canal and subsequently secure the eastern flank of the Allied landings at Sword beach. Theirs was arguably the most critical piece in the entire D-Day invasion.
Remington 870 DM Magpul & 700 Magpul v. Nevada Coyotes — Full Review
Published: February 21, 2018 { 0 comments }There’s more open country and public land within driving distance of Ely, Nevada, than the naked eye can take in. From rolling hills and a sea of endless cedars to the vast horizons of sage flats, it’s perfect country for coyotes. It was also perfect for putting two of Remington’s newest firearms to the ultimate predator hunting test. On a two-day hunt, we’d be using two modern takes on Remington classics—the 870 DM Magpul & the Model 700 Magpul.
Up Close & Personal: Stag 10S Heavy-Hitting .308 in close quarter situations — Full Review
Published: February 21, 2018 { 6 comments }Whether you’re talking about hunting or military applications, the.308 Winchester is by far and away one of the most versatile and popular cartridges ever made. Introduced in 1952 and later adapted for military use as the 7.62 NATO, or 7.62x51mm NATO, the mighty.308 was first chambered for Winchester’s legendary Model
Accurate, Modular, Lightweight Bolt-Action: The Q Fix — Full Review
Published: February 21, 2018 { 1 comment }I first saw the Q LLC “Fix” rifle at the 2017 SHOT show. It was a unique design that immediately grabbed my attention. A bolt action rifle that challenged the carbon fiber stocked mountain rifles in weight but also had characteristics of the chassis style precision guns that were taking the market by storm. Q [...]
MilSurp: German Military Handguns of World War II – An Armorer’s Nightmare
Published: February 21, 2018 { 34 comments }The Germans produced vast quantities of indigenous handguns, but they had to reach out to their occupied territories to meet the ever-growing demand. Early in the war most all of the pistols used by Germany were well built and effective. By the end around-the-clock strategic bombing had taken its toll. Even domestically produced versions became crude and rough. Those guns made by slave labor in the occupied territories were at times unsafe. Here is a brief roundup of the many-splendored handguns used by the Wehrmacht, Waffen SS, Luftwaffe, and Kriegsmarine during World War 2.
Showdown: Pocket Rocket v. PMR30 — Full Review
Published: February 21, 2018 { 36 comments }Why do we die-hard gun nerds do what we do? Sure, we pontificate about self-defense applications, civil unrest, and the pending end of the world. But what really is it that drives this preoccupation we all seem to have with cool dangerous toys that are sleek, black, and oily? I would assert that despite our [...]
SIG Sibling Showdown: The MCX Rattler versus MPX Death Match — Full Review
Published: February 20, 2018 { 3 comments }I live half an hour outside of town on my modest rural farm. I count the local Sheriff and his deputies among my dearest friends, but even in a perfect world it will still take them at least a quarter hour to get to my place from a standing start. I know of three of my immediate neighbors who have been the victims of home invasions in the past five years, two of which occurred while the homes were occupied. In one case the oldest family member present at the time was twelve. Defending yourself against an armed threat in your home is no baseless exercise.
Blaser F16 12 Gauge — Full Review
Published: February 18, 2018 { 5 comments }Blaser is not a centuries-old European gun dynasty, but in the last 50+ years it has made a name for itself with innovative designs and production of high-quality rifles, shotguns and drillings. The continues in the tradition of the F3, as a shotgun that delivers performance and innovation, but at a significantly more affordable cost. [...]
The Winchester Model 70 in .338 Winchester Magnum — A Classic Combination
Published: February 18, 2018 { 19 comments }Winchester’s marketing slogan was quite a bold statement, but one that was not braggadocio. When the Model 70 was introduced – way back in 1936 – it represented what I consider to be the ultimate culmination of the American bolt-action hunting rifle. It had all of the necessary appointments: a strong action – closely related to the Mauser Gewehr 98 – with a reliable extractor, capable of handling the highest of cartridge pressures, a well-fitting stock, an excellent trigger and a three-position safety which would (eventually) work perfectly with a rifle scope.
Big Green Continues Operations While Restructuring For Bankruptcy: New 1911 R1 Double Stack — Full Review
Published: February 18, 2018 { 63 comments }Remington has had some mild successes on the handgun front, and several debacles. I know all about those debacles, I came off the top rope over the RP9, and I stand by that decision. Big Green and I might’ve had a difference of opinion over that, but they didn’t hold a grudge. And I am glad, because this week we are taking a look at something that is an unmitigated success.
Remington Entering Controlled Fall, Files Bankruptcy in 2018
Published: February 14, 2018 { 68 comments }The company, headquartered in Madison, North Carolina, owes $950 million in near-term loans and bonds due in two years or less.
Three-Caliber Wheelgun with Two Cylinders: Taurus 692 — SHOT Show 2018
Published: February 14, 2018 { 41 comments }Taurus has come on with a vengeance in revolvers this year. The 692 is a full-sized revolver in .357 Magnum and .38 Special. Big deal, you say! Every .357 revolver also shoots .38 Special. That isn’t what we meant by multiple calibers. With one press of a button, the cylinder is removable, and in its place? Taurus has provided a 9mm cylinder. One wheelgun = three calibers. Now, we’re talking.
NightHawk Custom Unveils Pistol-Grip Tomahawk & Ladyhawk 1911 — SHOT Show 2018
Published: February 13, 2018 { 0 comments }Nighthawk is one of my favorite places to stop every year, if for no other reason, the unique twist they put on everything. Nighthawk is by far my favorite of the custom builders, and we are going to make it down to the shop in Arkansas one of these days.
Fred Eichler’s Rock River LAR-15: Perfect Lightweight AR for Predators — SHOT Show 2018
Published: February 13, 2018 { 8 comments }Rock River Arms has teamed with Fred Eichler for new Fred Eichler Signature Series Predator rifles. These guns are designed from the ground up with the hunter in mind, and mostly that means weight savings. The barrels are fluted, and the handguards are carbon fiber. The rifle weighs in at only 6.9 pounds.
Vortex Razor HD II Shaves 4 Oz., Viper HD Design Improvements — SHOT Show 2018
Published: February 13, 2018 { 0 comments }Vortex Optics has been growing by leaps and bounds, steadily chipping away at the market by dominating PRS and Hunting. Not so much new this year, but plenty improved.
Going the Distance: Mossberg MVP Precision in .224 Valkyrie/6.5 CM — SHOT Show 2018
Published: February 13, 2018 { 6 comments }When we think of the name Mossberg, most of us instantly envision a shotgun. They have been the leader in American shotguns for decades, and recently have been crushing it out of the park with new products like the 590 magazine-fed and the Shockwave. But they are also a powerhouse in rifles. And this year they are stepping into the precision game, with the Mossberg MVP Precision.
S&W New Editions to the M&P 2.0 Family — SHOT Show 2018
Published: February 13, 2018 { 13 comments }Last year, the release of the M&P 2.0 family of pistols was one of the biggest stories fo the year. Unlike other companies, Smith and Wesson seemed to listen to every customer critique over the preceding 10 years and fixed every one of them in the 2.0. Not some, spaced over the next 3 generations. All of them. Right now. Ready go.
“We the People” 1911; Elegance & Class from SIG Sauer — SHOT Show 2018
Published: February 12, 2018 { 13 comments }SIG Sauer is best known for military-style hardware, ranging from submachine guns and sniper rifles, to the new Army M17 pistol. It is easy to forget they also make 1911 pistols, some of the best around. The first time I shot a Sig 1911 over a decade ago, it was hard to miss the value of the included high-end features. This year, SIG released a special edition “ We the People” model, a sure win for collectors.
A CCW-Pistol (Under $270!) A Design for Everyone — SHOT Show 2018
Published: February 12, 2018 { 9 comments }SCCY is one of the last of the little guys, a firearms maker that isn’t part of a giant conglomerate. They set out to fill a single niche, and they have done that well. Sitting down with SCCY at SHOT 2018, we learned some of the reasons why.
Welcome to the US: SAR Arms 9mm CCW Pistol — SHOT Show 2018
Published: February 12, 2018 { 4 comments }SAR Arms had a new pistol, but more importantly a new company. The days of multiple importers are over, SAR is now SAR USA. This is a subsidiary of the Turkish firearms maker and will be handling all warranty issues for SAR pistols, regardless of who brought it into the country. This should smooth over any and all issues regarding parts availability, new models, and magazines.
Pirate Pistol: FightLite SCR AR Pistol -Ultimate Truck Gun — SHOT Show 2018
Published: February 12, 2018 { 72 comments }It is not often I see something so cool I have to stop and look, even if in practical use it has to be ridiculous. But the FightLite pistol grabbed my attention. Part pirate gun, part AR, this is one of those products that make even the most cynical ask “ How does it work?” It looks like the Sand People on Tatooine should be carrying it, but I am pretty intrigued.
The Evolution of the Canik TP9: Everyman’s Combat Handgun Becomes the Apex Predator
Published: February 11, 2018 { 31 comments }Mechanical systems evolve over time. The earliest German Messerschmitt Bf 109 A fighter plane first flew in 1937. That remarkable aircraft sported a Jumo 210A 600-horsepower engine driving a fixed-pitch two-bladed propeller. Seven years later the Bf 109 G-6 carried a Daimler-Benz DB 605A-1 powerplant producing 1,455 hp turning a constant-speed variable-pitch paddle-geometry three-bladed prop. The G-6 was easily twice as capable as the earlier A model. The Nazis ultimately produced 33, 984 copies of the plane. Operational pressures exerted by full-bore combat on three fronts drove the Bf 109 to evolve over time.
Perfect Medicine for Predators: Rock River’s LAR-8M in 6.5 Creedmoor — Review
Published: February 11, 2018 { 8 comments }There’s no real way to know what you or your firearm are capable of without adequate training. As Jim Mora so famously quipped after his football team suffered a blowout loss, “You think you know, but you have no idea.” And that’s exactly what you find as you start to train with others more competent than yourself — you were never aware of just how much you didn’t know.
Now Made Stateside-SIG P210: Elegant Heritage & Timeless Design — SHOT Show 2018
Published: February 9, 2018 { 16 comments }Remember our coverage of the P210 last year? Me too. Followed immediately by Sig not shipping them. Catching up with SIG this year, they promised me they are both 1) real and 2) shipping right now. The new P210 is 100% American made, and sure to get you hot and bothered if you like target pistols. I still feel about it now exactly like I did at SHOT 2017.
