Summer is upon us, and soon (if not already) ladies will be trading their jeans, leggings and, flannel for summer dresses, sandals and, flowy skirts. These softer, cooler fabrics are typically not well suited to carrying a firearm, which is one of the reasons that a concealed carry purse is a great option for many ladies in summer.

There are many holsters to select from these days, and more are being introduced all the time. Regardless of the gun model or the holster manufacturer, there are certain features of holsters that are important and some that are strictly a personal preference.

Ankle holsters in movies always look kind of cool but is this a feasible way to practice concealed carry?

I love the Ultra Custom (spoiler) because of its use of leather as the main component. Personally, I like carrying a gun in a leather holster (especially IWB) because the material is much softer to the touch than other options. However, there are negatives to an all-leather design. The Ultra Custom is everything that a leather holster is, without these negatives. Gun retention is on par with a Kydex holster if it is fit right!

The Fastrax PAC is a fanny pack that was specifically designed for carrying a concealed handgun. With the typical fanny pack, you would need to dig around in search of your handgun. But this new one from Galco features an internal pivoting holster that is activated with an external ripcord.

Prior to this project, I lacked any real experience in leatherworking. So I’m fairly confident when I say that this project is well within the skill set of almost anyone. So, if you’re looking for an inexpensive, weekend, firearm project, take a look at the holster kits from Tandy Leather.
