Prepping 101: Rocket Stove Canning
Published: May 10, 2015 { 5 comments }No matter how much food you store, it will never be enough. At some point you will have to either grow your own food, or provide a valuable product or service that you can swap for food, or for the “coin of the realm” (whatever money turns out to still work after the collapse), that you can swap for food. But in most parts of the world, food doesn’t grow year round regardless. Grains will store with little outside intervention. Beans will certainly store in most environments, and potatoes, winter squashes, and some fruits will last the winter if you provide for them a root cellar of some sort that will keep them fresh. Other than that, if you want to eat vegetables and fruits year round, you will have to learn how to can your food. It isn’t hard, but you have to do it now, because as you’ll see, canning is fraught with pitfalls if you don’t do it right.
What’s In Your Pocket? Training with Sub-Compacts
Published: May 8, 2015 { 26 comments }What gun you are carrying right now? Odds are it isn’t small-frame, snub-nose revolver. A few years back it would have been. But now sub-compacts are the norm. How do they stack up in intense training classes? A recent 40 hour class with Massad Ayoob should be proof enough….
why Sporting Clays is one of America’s fastest growing sports.
Published: May 7, 2015 { 11 comments }Grab your shotgun and come with me. I just shot my first round of Sporting Clays and I’m hooked. The sport is fast, challenging, and more fun than is normally legal.
Ammo Test: Sig Sauer Elite Performance V-Crown 9mm
Published: April 29, 2015 { 16 comments }While the Sig ammo is a relative newcomer to the market, the people are not. I spent some time talking with Dan Powers, who runs the ammo show, and it’s clear that the folks behind Sig Sauer’s new ammunition division have been there and done that. Because every caliber, load and brand combination is different, we’re going to be testing a number of different Sig Sauer loads over the coming weeks. We’ll start the handgun family with Sig’s Elite Performance V-Crown 9mm load.

Prepping 101: $998 Off-Grid Wood Cookstove $995
Published: April 26, 2015 { 27 comments }This is one of the few articles in this series where I haven’t yet reviewed the product, but I plan to follow it up with a review in the future because I bought one. My intention in posting this today is to give the regular readers of this column a official heads up on a heavily discounted and apparently high quality product that may be a priority for you in your prepping supplies. For many years I have been looking at wood cook stoves. If you have never seen one (and I actually haven’t in person), these are not regular woodstoves. Wood cookstoves were popular in the US between the 1880s and 1930s. They look like a regular stove, with an oven and burners, but they run on wood and have no electric or gas components.
Budget Minded Guns for Home Defense
Published: April 24, 2015 { 255 comments }We’re beginning a new series here at GunsAmerica that examines the best options for home defense. But there’s a twist. In order to make our list, these guns and tools have to be reliable, capable, and (most importantly) affordable. There’s a lot to talk about–from gun design to caliber considerations–but these guns will get the job done without breaking the bank.
Shooting History-Winchester’s Widow Maker?–Old Gun Review
Published: April 22, 2015 { 33 comments }Yep, Winchester made a 1911. But it is not the 1911 you are looking for. This is the 1911 SL. The SL stands for self loading. This 1911 is a shotgun. Unlike the other 1911, this one was not designed by John Browning but he influenced the design in an interesting way.
Prepping 101: Two Minutes to Midnight
Published: April 18, 2015 { 24 comments }I find it shocking that the least popular articles in this series are always about the threat of nuclear war. Because from a purely survival standpoint, nuclear war is the only scenario that will most likely result in the actual post apocalyptic society for which we are all preparing, a society in which survival will truly be of the fittest, and of the most prepared. Nuclear war is also the most likely scenario of where our current international disaster is headed, and I’m not saying this to be alarmist. If you look around the world right now, clashes are ramping out of control in nearly ever corner of the globe. World currencies are competing for who can devalue themselves the quickest, because of un-repayable debt, and America is being shut out of world trade deals, because everyone but Americans now understand that our reign is over. If you were an American power broker, wouldn’t you say it’s about time to pop a nuke or two and get the world back in line with American values?
