Canadian police recovered a flying drone smuggling guns across the border from the U.S. after the pilot crashed the drone into a tree. The drone came down near Port Lambton, Ontario, a town northeast of Detroit.
The tree belongs to Port Lambton residents Christine and Jeremy Ackwood.
“Our neighbor had spotted someone in our yard in the middle of the night and he had a remote control,” Christine Ackwood told CTV News. “He wasn’t sure what was going on.”
“We weren’t sure if they’d done it before. The police never did say that to us but we were kind of curious if they knew — if they spotted out that we were away,” said Jeremy.
Port Lambton residents witnessed a strange person piloting the drone and called the police. Witnesses say the man fled in a nearby vehicle after crashing the drone.
When police recovered the drone, they found it with a plastic grocery bag attached to it with carabiners and electrician’s tape. Inside were 11 handguns in more bags.
According to the police, the pistols were mostly models banned in Canada. They also said the guns were defaced, with the serial numbers removed.
Police aren’t sure who the guns were intended for or who was attempting to smuggle them across the border. Authorities typically search land vehicles for smuggled guns, but criminals are always coming up with new tactics.

Investigators believe the smuggler flew the drone from Michigan over the St Clair River, which marks the border between the U.S. and Canada.
“You know between Canada and the U.S., and the various law enforcement authorities, they’re going to have to get their head around this,” said CTV public safety analyst Chris Lewis. “Because, let’s face it, there could be much more dangerous things than guns going back and forth, if they wanted to.”

Not much of a pipeline. As someone stated. Go out in the country and hand ’em across the border. I’m more worried about all the BAD stuff coming across our southern border. Canada has their problems too…ones more worrisome than a few guns coming across their southern border. Those guns were probably going to the french separatist movement that is still around up there.

The U.S./Canada border is a joke. There are thousands of miles where the border between the two nations consists of a metal wire supported by concrete posts. I used to hunt on a friend’s Montana farm right on the border, and if a flock of Hungarian partridge flew illegally from the U.S. into Canada, I stepped over the wire to “arrest” some of these law-breakers with my shotgun. I don’t see why crooks should resort to drones or other hi-tech to smuggle guns or worse things across the border when they could just hand them to an accomplice on the other side of the wire.
