Cage the Elephant Singer Arrested on Gun Charges in New York

The frontman for the Grammy award-winning rock band, Cage the Elephant, was arrested in Manhattan last week on gun charges according to multiple media outlets

The “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” singer, Matt Schultz, was charged with felony criminal possession of a firearm and posted a $10,000 cash bail.

According to the criminal complaint, a hotel employee saw Shultz pull a gun from his pants pocket in one of the Bowrey Hotel’s public restrooms. Police were dispatched to the scene and recovered two loaded firearms, a Sig Sauer and a Smith & Wesson. They also found several polaroids of “a hand holding, pointing of the firearm,” prosecutors said.

Additionally, the police found six handwritten notes, “one of which states in substance: ‘I will protect myself if I am attacked,’” according to prosecutors.

Officers, responding Thursday morning, knocked on the door of Shultz’s hotel room. He stepped into the hallway and confessed to having had two .45 caliber guns. The singer appeared to be intoxicated according to the police. When police asked if the guns were still in his possession, he told them he was unsure.

Police arrested Schultz and took him to the 9th precinct while a judge signed off on a search warrant. Upon entering the hotel room, they found the firearms and the photographs.

While detained, Schultz was taken to the Bellvue Hospital for medication and later returned to the 9th precinct.

Before this incident, the rocker had no prior criminal history. Shultz now faces multiple counts of weapons possession charges, according to court records.

Attorneys for Schultz stated that the guns were purchased legally, but were not registered in New York.

In June, SCOTUS ruled in a 6-3 decision that the Second Amendment is an individual right that may be exercised both in the home and in public.

Unfortunately for Schultz, there are several legal challenges in play and SCOTUS has allowed New York gun-control laws to stay enacted until those challenges in the lower courts are cleared. After that, New York is expected to re-legislate based on their rulings.

Cage the Elephant is a massively successful rock band that formed in Bowling Green, KY in 2006. They released their debut album in 2008 and went on to have a string of radio hits. The band won a Grammy for Best Rock Album in 2016 for “Tell me I’m Pretty,” and again in 2019 for “Social Cues.”

The band’s second album, 2011’s, “Thank You Happy Birthday,” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and the album’s lead single, “Shake Me Down,” was No. 1 on Billboard’s Rock Songs and Alternative Songs charts.

Well first Schultz must establish good moral character before Hochul (sp?) can sign his release.
