A Barrett for Your Backpack: Meet the MRAD Covert — SHOT Show 2026

in Mitchell Graf, SHOT Show 2026

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

The Barrett MRAD Covert is a modular bolt-action rifle that breaks down in minutes to fit inside an Eberlestock backpack without sacrificing accuracy.

MSRP is in the $7,000 range.

Built on the proven MRAD platform, it targets users who need compact transport and reliable reassembly. The Covert keeps familiar MRAD controls while shrinking the footprint. Barrett positions it for discreet movement, field serviceability, and multi-caliber flexibility.

Design and Purpose

The MRAD Covert focuses on portability without redesigning the core system. The rifle disassembles or reassembles in under five minutes when you take your time. It fits inside the included Eberlestock backpack, making it easier to transport without drawing attention.

Despite the Covert name, it stays very much an MRAD. The rifle uses the same user-changeable barrel system and magazine pattern. That means existing MRAD owners will feel right at home.

Caliber Options and Barrel System

Barrett offers the MRAD Covert in .308 Winchester and 6.5 Creedmoor. Both configurations use a 17-inch barrel with a 1:8 twist. The user-changeable barrel system requires only one tool and remains compatible with MRAD barrel conversion kits.

This setup lets shooters swap calibers quickly in the field. It also keeps logistics simple for agencies or users already invested in MRAD parts.

The barrel is fluted and threaded for mounting suppressors.

Weight, Size, and Handling

The rifle weighs 11.9 pounds without an optic or suppressor. Overall length measures 40.4 inches with the stock extended. A folding stock reduces length and protects the bolt handle during transport.

The adjustable cheek piece and tool-less length-of-pull adjustment help dial in fit fast. Those adjustments matter when you’re reassembling and deploying the rifle under time constraints.

Stock folds and locks the bolt handle into place.

Controls, Trigger, and Action

The MRAD Covert uses Barrett’s enclosed polymer bolt guides. They keep the action running smoothly in dirty or harsh environments. The trigger group removes from the lower receiver without tools, which simplifies maintenance.

The ambidextrous safety uses a short 45-degree throw. It also doubles as a great thumb rest when shooting. Users can configure the lever for either side.

The MRAD Covert uses AR grips, and features a 45-degree safety.

Availability and Pricing

Barrett plans to ship the MRAD Covert in the first quarter of this year. Rifles are already in production. Pricing aligns with the standard MRAD, placing MSRP around the $7,000 range.

Who It’s For

The MRAD Covert fits military, law enforcement, and civilian shooters who value mobility. It favors those who need a fully capable precision rifle that doesn’t advertise itself during transport. Compact, modular, and familiar, the MRAD Covert extends the MRAD platform in a practical direction.
