The death of Freddie Gray has been ruled a homicide, Baltimore authorities announced on Friday, as such, prosecutors will charge six police officers with homicide, manslaughter and misconduct.
Gray died while in police custody. He had sustained a severe spinal cord injury.
Baltimore state attorney Marilyn J. Mosby said that the officers abused Gray and failed to seek medical treatment after he sustained the injury. By the time the officers brought Gray to the van to take him away, “Mr. Gray was no longer breathing at all,” said Mosby.
“We have probable cause to file criminal charges,” Ms. Mosby said.
The death of Gray is believed to be the result of an injury he sustained while riding in the van without a seatbelt, said Mosby.
Mosby also said that although Gray had a knife on his persons, “The knife was not a switchblade, and it is lawful,” also noting that the officers “failed to establish probable cause for an arrest.”
The officers charged:
One officer, Caesar R. Goodson Jr. was charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, assault and misconduct in office. Lt. Brian W. Rice was charged with manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment. Officer William G. Porter and Sgt. Alicia D. White were each charged with manslaughter, assault and misconduct in office. Officers Edward M. Nero and Garrett E. Miller were charged with assault, misconduct in office and false imprisonment.
Why does everyone assume the police are guilty? There are good and bad in everything. It’s always a racial issue. Maybe we need segregation again. Give the blacks there own state with Obama incharge and see what happens. I’m sure al sharpton and Jesse jackass will help
Bingo!
We could give them California. One of he most beautiful places on he planet.
I find it amazing that no one recognizes the fact that the black community in is the most racist group of people in the country. If you are white, whether your forefathers owned slaves or not, black people hate your guts because of the color of your skin. Some will ignorantly deny this. Some will say they have every reason to be. Either way, it’s unacceptable. The black community has no interest in peace and harmony. With few exceptions, they are slaves to the democratic party. The black community wants war in this country. The only good white person, is a dead white person. That’s the ugly truth. Then you have fools like some who post here that they hate cops and run from them every chance they get. Idiots like this will love California. They will feel right at home.
Looks like we have a condemning mob right here. A uninformed assortment of individuals wishing they were part of lynch mob with six nooses. Facts and nothing but the facts matter. The false information involving this case is abundant. READ THIS STORY AGAIN. Two highly informed “officials” say he died at two different times and two different causes: he was not breathing when brought to the van and the other says he died from injuries sustained during the ride. I’m only taking a wild ass guess here, but you can only die or be murdered once. Okay mob, show me which, or if either of these versions is true. Such a rush to press charges, no Grand Jury used in this case. Just a inexperienced prosecutor (who ran on a anti cop election campaign) charged everything on the books. All to kiss the butts of the rioters instead of arresting them. Baltimore is very gun restricted, so rioters loot and burn with impunity and city officials withdrew the police making an apocalyptic sacrafice of over 200 business and holmes.
I believe all lives matter. I also believe justice will prevail, in spite of mob mentality, political interference, racial instigators and the Feds jumping in looking for hate crimes before investigation are completed. If the lynch mob drive is so strong you forgo due process and the mandate of innocent until proven guilty, then you also won’t mind the Government confiscating all firearms. The street goes both ways choose your path wisely. A cop in Nyc and another in Idaho were shot and killed without provication two days ago. No outrage, no riots, no race pedelers, no Feds investigating who hates cops. Are there bad Cops yes, bad Priests yes, bad Politicians yes and bad civillians. Let the Courts sort them out. Let the guility pay the price for their deeds and the innocent rejoin our ranks. If you don’t like the outcome, be a man and suck it up, not an animal rioting in the street looking for a new pair of nike’s and a TV all in the name of equality.
Cops are Americans with family’s. I guess if u want a country like Syria or Afghanistan you could make a stand to back up all your “hate cop” talk. Oh and it’s so easy to Monday morning quarterback . . . especially when you haven’t played football before.
Well, I want to know why the victim ran, as soon as he saw a cop? If they say he was illegally arrested, I think not. If he was running from the cops, even IF he did nothing wrong, then he is immediately guilty of resisting arrest. The cops may have messed up, but so did the victim. I’m not saying this young man should have died; this is tragic. But a little common sense and respect goes a long way. You just don’t run from (or point a gun at) a cop! Nor should you get mouthy! Duh! If you’re innocent, then stand your ground, and do so politely.
you would respect people that have a history of contempt for you and brutalizing you? What is all this deference to police that have shown you time and again that they care nothing at all for you.
The guy broke no law, the guy did nothing illegal or anything at all warranting detainment or did you miss that part.
And who anymore believes that being innocent saves you from harsh and humiliating treatment from law enforcement…OR..even that being innocent stops the cops from beating you and putting charges on you. You have to be a deliberate ostrich to ever utter such things anymore…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktsPEGrGyqg
Wow on that link. There’s just people that are no good out there. While I believe the most police officers are good, there are those that abuse the power and that video clearly shows it.
This is America, the land of the free… If a person wants to run, or is running, he has the freedom to do so. A cop cannot detain anyone unless they believe a crime has been committed. It’s sad that there are people that believe this individual should have used common sense and is partially at fault for running. Again, this is America and all people have the right to do anything they want as long as they are not committing a crime, and because this guy ran after seeing a cop is certainly not a crime or even a reason to be detained. Heck, I run away from cops too… I hate cops… Cops are not our friends and they seem to look for ways to cause grief to everyone they come in contact with. Never trust a cop…. And never answer your door if its a cop… I thank God for people like Mosby…
You are never instantly guilty; you’re considered innocent until proven guilty and the burden of proof is on the state. You can’t be charged with resisting arrest when there are no justifiable grounds for the arrest. Running is no admission of guilt, nor is it considered probable cause ( obviously if you’re being pulled over for a traffic stop, that is considered an “arrest”, so if you flee [ again, only if the officer had a legal reason to stop you ] then that is considered evading )…
The Supreme Court has ruled that you are legally allowed to use any means or level of force necessary to resist an unlawful arrest ( ie kidnapping ).
Cops are not our friends and never have been: Seems like a cops primary goal is to mess with every public citizen they come in contact with and are no different than a serious gang thug while violating rights of others. The only difference is the courts cater to the thug cops as if they were Gods that can do no wrong. (I thank God for honest people like Mosby).
Why do so many people assume they have all the facts and evidence based on media reports and a grainy video?
If you got arrested for murder (possibly falsely) would you want the media and general public to decide your fate? Would you want your charges based on a politician who says to the protesters ” I heard your call for ‘No justice, no peace.’ … Your peace is sincerely needed as I work to deliver justice on behalf of this young man.” Why should demonstrators opinions and calls be considered instead of facts? Are we now deciding guilt based on who demonstrates or riots the most? Why should justice be only on behalf of “this young man” and not just “Justice”.
The Cops WILL” Walk …. NO” Jury will Convict period ….. Same way with what went on there about 3:00 pm today ….5/3/15 Another shooting “….. The Drama will continue ….. Next Case Please !
Police officers per the nature of their job are required to be big, strong, tough and able to handle themselves in situations involving controlling violent and dangerous criminals. Cops are physically attacked all the time and have to be able to defend themselves in doing their job. Their job by the way is to insure that civilization prevails over anarchy. Do you want police officers to be hired only if they possess the qualities of Mr. Rogers or Peewee Herman? That would solve the problem. No one would get roughed up or hurt. Only the police officers would get hurt and their job effectiveness would be a joke. If you aren’t happy about the prospect of getting manhandled then don’t involve yourself in criminal activity. If every cop in this country suddenly went on strike the crime wave that would ensue would jolt the crybabies into a different attitude about police officers.
These officers are sacrificial lambs charged to appease a mob mentality by someone who should never be in a position of power. I pray to God they are fully vindicated of all charges and get an apology and fat check from the city.
May not be fully Vindicated as normal: There is that darned “inconvenient” Video showing a spinal injury before he was loaded into the van ( neurosurgeons looking at the video have no doubt) and then the fact they didn’t even care to strap him in, and then a joy ride…No Just not the normal “internal investigate ourselves” this time.
Those that want Cops Vindicated no matter what are the root of the problem. These are not heroes, neither do we see a good cop in the video. (ie the Evidence we have so far)
You forgot to mention they ignored his plea for medical help.
Come’on guys. Let the ‘justice’ system do its job. Maybe enough facts will emerge and the world can know what actually happened here…
The problem with “just let the justice system do it’s job” is that in so many cases the justice system has failed to do its job. Can you say Rodney King, Trayvon Martin or the increasing numbers of people that have been set free after spending years in prison or on death row. In the King case, we clearly saw on video those officer beating the crap out of king. What did the justice do? Move the case to a community of former and retired police office. What was the results? The office get off the first time and you have the LA riots. We the people are not stupid and you can not continue to tell us to wait on justice.
These cops will all walk.
Always do no matter how guilty. They are supposed to be no better than the citizens they protect. What bullshit. They get away with murder all the time. No arrest no trial. You kill someone and see if you get the same treatment.
At this point we have some serious allegations and a citizen who died while in police custody. IF in fact these allegations are proven true the men and women charged with his death deserve whatever comes to them. If in fact he was arrested and technically NO criminal violation was present to justify such an arrest it tells me that their department has some serious issues at hand. There is no excuse for arresting someone who hasn’t committed a crime. It is illegal as it should be. Again lots of allegations but if they are proven true these officers belong in prison for a very long time.
Been around long enough to know that the media and the system can jump to all kinds of conclusions in their haste to persecute someone so people should hold off condemning the officers until such time that those allegations are proven. We’ve all seen ‘bad cops’ but we’ve also seen a lot of very good cops. Tough job but society needs peace keepers.
Glad to see some bad officers getting their comeuppance…we the people are sick and tired of militarized police running roughshod over our rights.
plinkymcgee I guess you don’t believe in being innocent until proven guilty.
Beats the usual: no opportunity to ever prove a cop guilty.
The people defending these cops that trampled Grays rights never stop and think it was the cops actions that first killed him and his rights illegally. I mean, think about it. What the hell is going on here in the US that a cop can arrest a person for looking at him? Have the country gone nuts! Has there been a mass mental disorder I haven’t heard about?
I am surprised to see this sentiment on pro-gun website. I guess the public has had enough of police immunity and reckless behavior.
Let the Justice System do its job. There needs to be an investigation and trial. This is called Due Process. If this man died due to police negligence, persons responsible should be punished according to the law.
This is not the Old West where justice was swift and very corrupt. If it was, The police would have shot and killed the thug rioters than were throwing bricks, burning and robbing inocent businesses. They Mayor of Baltimore should be investigated for her actions as well.
It seems to me in this case Mr.Gray was denied his due process by the police.
