Prepping 101: Personal Dosimeters for High Level Radiation

Prepping 101: Personal Dosimeters for High Level Radiation

I want to vomit sometimes when I see the lame stuff that is being thrown out there into the prepper market. Prepping has become a hot topic, but I think very few people in America understand just how grave our situation has become. I recently covered some of the disinformation when it comes to long term storable survival food, and this week I’m getting back to the topic of radiation. DHS just released a request for Wearable Intelligent Nuclear Detection (WIND) devices, but the concept of “dosimeters” has been around for decades. Just check your dirty bomb fear porn at the door. Radiation is one of the more dangerous topics when it comes to surviving after the collapse. This is a brief overview, and some inexpensive resources.

Prepping 101: Canning Food With Paraffin Wax for Short Term Preservation

Prepping 101: Canning Food With Paraffin Wax for Short Term Preservation

The title of this article sounds more like a scientific paper than a survival topic, and that is by design. I would prefer that the dufus brigade not read it. Canning food demands attention to detail, and though this method of canning is a fringe, do not try this at home kind of idea, it is still canning. You need to pay attention to the details. I would not suggest canning with just paraffin wax except in a genuine “use or or lose it” food survival situation, but it does work.

Kimber Hunter .308 Deer Rifle (vs. Wild Florida Hogs) - New Gun Review

Kimber Hunter .308 Deer Rifle (vs. Wild Florida Hogs) – New Gun Review

With deer season just around the corner, I thought that now would be a good time to review the Kimber Hunter, which is their entry level deer rifle of a very high end line. If you are a regular here at GunsAmerica, you’ve probably seen the ad for the rifle running on our homepage, and they sent me a review rifle a few months ago. Now that summer is pretty much behind us, it’s time to start thinking new deer rifle, and if you have the budget, the $885 MSRP Kimber Hunter is an option you should seek out. Most people think 1911 when they think of Kimber, but the company started with rifles, and it is still a core component of Kimber Firearms today. The Hunter is the same action as the $1,400 Kimber rifles. If are have been looking for an upgrade this deer season, please watch the video.

Prepping 101: Biolite Base Camp Rocket Stove - King of Bug In Cooking

Prepping 101: Biolite Base Camp Rocket Stove – King of Bug In Cooking

From the very start in this column I have been an advocate of “bug-in” as opposed to bug out. Stock up on flour, grains, rice, beans, and canned food, and figure out a means to cook them. In the past I have considered short term cooking solutions, like heater bags and alcohol stoves, and long term solutions, using wood and diesel fuel. This is the king of wood burning Rocket Stoves.

How to Install a Pitcher Pump – Prepping 101

Some survival issues are really hard, and some are very easy. If you are on well water and you are worried that you will not be able to drink once the grids goes down for good, you are correct. But there is a good chance that an inexpensive “Pitcher Pump” will solve your problem.

"Say Hello to my 1st Amendment Cage" - Says DNC

“Say Hello to my 1st Amendment Cage” – Says DNC

Why are liberals so against guns? It doesn’t make any sense right? Everywhere that has implemented strict gun control spirals out off the scale with crime. Why would people who profess to care about others push an agenda that only hurts others?

How to Make Hardtack - The Original Bugout Food - Prepping 101

How to Make Hardtack – The Original Bugout Food – Prepping 101

“Sustenance in the absence of perishable foods” is perhaps the most concise definition of survival food I have found. I just got that from the Wikipedia page on Hardtack, which is a hard cracker made of flour, water and salt, known for its long term storage and sustainment properties.

#Milsurp: Shooting My Enfields - Midway Pakistan Ammo FAIL!

#Milsurp: Shooting My Enfields – Midway Pakistan Ammo FAIL!

There are a few guns that I think everyone should own at least once. Of them, the British Enfield, or more proper, the “Lee-Enfield,” is one of the most distinctive. I thought that maybe this week dragging out my Enfields would be a great way to start a new regular series on military surplus firearms.

Long Range Assassin is .30-06 Semi-Auto AR-15 - Noreen BN36

Long Range Assassin is .30-06 Semi-Auto AR-15 – Noreen BN36

Several years ago I happened upon a rifle that blew me away. It was at Media Day at the Range, which is the day before our annual SHOT Show in Las Vegas, and I have to say, it takes a lot to blow me away. That rifle was the Noreen Arms BN36 Long Range Assassin, which you will recognize as an AR-15 pattern, in .30-06. I have always been a huge fan of that cartridge, and I always wondered if the rifle ran as well as my M1 Garands. This week I finally got a chance to put the Noreen to the test, ad I love it!

Hacking at Humans – Broadsword vs. Katana – Prepping 101

I would never suggest anyone bring a sword to a gunfight, but I think that a good quality sword should have it’s place in your preparations for the breakdown of our civil world.
