Army Vet Shoots Home Invader: ‘I’m an old guy. I got to face up to this’

The Second Amendment is a civil right. Though it often gets lost in the firestorm of political rhetoric surrounding firearms, the Second Amendments helps protect the weakest in society from being harmed by the strongest. It levels the playing field so that all have an equal ability to protect life, liberty, and property.

Craig Noggle understood this better than most. He used his Second Amendment rights to fight off a would-be attacker last week, reminding his neighbors and community why the freedom to keep and bear arms deserves protecting and defending.

Noggle, a 66-year old Army vet with a history of bad health, was in his home in Akron, OH., when he told ABC 5 he heard a knock on his door. He found his neighbor, Daniel Givens, standing on his porch. Noggle said he had had previous run-ins with Givens, telling the much younger man to slow down on the street and challenging him for peering into the homes of neighbors.

When Givens refused to go away, Noggle gave him fair warning.

“You try to come in through this door, I’m gonna shoot you,” Noggle said he told his neighbor. “He said, “Yeah, where’s the gun?’ and I picked it up. I said, ‘This is the gun and you’re gonna get shot.'”

Ignoring Noggle’s warning, Givens proceeded to force the door open and wrestle Noggle to the ground.

“I thought, ‘I’m an old guy. I got to face up to this. I’m just not going to be able, I don’t know if I can take this guy,'” Noggle said.

Fortunately, the Army vet was able to maintain control of his firearm and, after sustaining blows to his lower back and arm, shot Givens in the leg.

Police found Givens at his home later that day. He’s been charged with assault and aggravated burglary, though the true extent of the damage he caused may be far worse.

ABC 5 reported last Thursday that, in a tragic turn of events, Noggle passed away as the result of injuries sustained in a car crash unrelated to the attempted break-in. Police say he drove off an interstate around 2 p.m. on October 13, went down an embankment, and landed on Brecksville Road. He died at a nearby hospital later that day.

Police have yet to indicate whether his crash is the result of injuries inflicted by Givens or is tied to Noggle’s history of bad health. He told ABC 5 that he survived three strokes and two heart attacks before his run-in with Givens.

Christian, I have been following your posts for some time now and I am impressed with your “American” sense of inherent freedoms. You mentioned the possibility of leaving Germany due to oppressive regulations, especially the restrictions on firearms. Ironically, Americans are also facing ever increasing gun restrictions. Only the Second Amendment to our Constitution has shielded us from the outright banning of our firearms.

Never the less, one of our two major political parties, the Democrat Party, is obsessed with regulating private gun ownership to the point that it will be almost impossible to posses firearms. Worse, many of the established Republican Party elite also share this desire. What all Democrats and many Republican leaders tend to dismiss is how far the gun owners will go in defying the trend toward effectively disarming the people. They seem to be unable to grasp the fact that tens of millions of Americans will behave exactly like the American colonists did when the British troops marched to Concord and Lexington to seize stored arms. Let’s just say it was not a good day for those British troops. Actually, it was hell on Earth until the surviving British troops reached Boston.

Only 1/3rd of the colonists were rebels, another third were apathetic people who stood on the sidelines as onlookers. The last 1/3rd were dedicated loyalists to the Crown. The point? over 100 million Americans, (1/3rd of the population), possess 300 million firearms of all types, from the bolt action .22 caliber squirrel rifle to the .50 caliber semi-automatic rifle that can easily reach out and touch you over half a mile away. The most popular rifle is the AR15 civilian version of our Army M16. The only difference is that the AR15 rifle is not capable of full automatic fire. For practical purposes, semi-automatic operation is more effective than full-automatic fire, even on the battlefield.

No rational American wants to see our society descend into the chaos of armed conflict. No one would enjoy such internecine disorder. The really regrettable thing about the possibility of a second American revolution is that it is avoidable. The elite in the Federal Government can prevent it by a cease and desist in their efforts to infringe on the right to keep and bear arms. Alas, their fear of an armed populace, plus their refusal to see the reason for the intransigence of the people who own firearms, are leading all of us to a world shaking catastrophe. The developed economies of the world would be profoundly affected by such an American disaster. The banking systems alone would be turned inside out. Any government that holds American dollar reserves, American Treasury Notes or Government Bonds would suffer a complete loss of the value of those financial instruments. I’m thinking of the domino effect here.

Christian, it’s as if the Americans are on a road to national suicide and the “trusted leaders” are blinded by the compulsion to control the people. These politicians have lost the true understanding of what the American Constitution is all about. Our Constitution describes a Representative Republic controlled by the people, not the government. The American colonists rebelled against the lawful government of 1776, namely the British Government of King George. We are fast approaching another conflict with the current lawful government in Washington, D. C. It’s like a slow motion train wreck that you cannot avert your eyes from.

An ancient curse is becoming relevant once again. “May you live in interesting times.” Well, we are living in interesting times and it’s going to get worse before it gets better, …..a lot worse.

Hello Joe! I am sorry but I saw your comment just now. I have already written a lot of comments, so sometimes I lose track of them.

Yes, that is right, I would use any chance to get out of here, even when this would mean to leave the comfort I had gathered here. Europe is dying but I am shocked to see that the situation in the USA is not different. Also, here the people are kept defenseless, living from month to month thanks to the low wages for hard work, families cannot afford to have children while illegal aliens are living from social security and create children without an end because the stupid inhabitants of the European countries are willing to pay them everything and everyone who is against that is a Nazi, racist, sick bastard or whatever kind of words they can find.

Yes, Joe, I am very interested into the American presidential elections because I know how important it is to the world and not just to your country. And everything you do has an impact on us as well. I remember the first day of the 2008 crash, when these “experts” told us in TV that the crash in the USA would not affect us. And in the end, who had to pay for all of this mess? We, the normal hard working people that try desperately to feed themselves and their families! We, the people that were not responsible for this mess! I believe into Mr. Pence as your new vice president, if Trump shall become your new president but I have strong doubts about that, especially after watching the last presidential debate. But if Hillary continues the mess that Obama has started, I have absolutely no idea how our world will look like after her four-years period or, if really worse, after an eight-years period.

I always thought that the AR-15 is just semi-automatic for civilians. I never knew that it is made for civilians only and only in semi-automatic, very interesting. But I agree that I also believe that semi-auto shots are the most accurate ones you can do, based on my “experience” in video games of course. And yes, if you lose your guns like that, your country will be a complete disaster. I was watching the video of Wayne La Pierre, which Gunsamerica has linked to, and I was shocked to see the pictures and the dangers your country has to face. It reminds me a lot of the truth that we have in Germany. Our schools are a mess too, as well as our security, our borders and everything else that you have to face today. And the only difference is that we have no guns to secure ourselves, while you still have but your freedom is in the biggest danger ever. Haven’t I found Gunsamerica, I would have never ever thought that your country is like that. I see the brutal truth about your country every day and I have learned a lot from that. It is completely different than what they show us here in TV.

I am also still waiting for a huge conflict coming between civilians or between civilians and their government. I do believe this will happen in Europe more than it will happen in your country but even about that I am not 100% sure, if Hillary should win the votes and will put in a new Supreme Court that could interpret the 2nd amendment as justice Ginsburg has stated last July: https://www.gunsamerica.com/blog/justice-ginsburg-laments-decision-affirming-2a-individual-right/

It is time that your nation rises from its ashes and we in Europe should do the same. But the only problem in starting is that too many people are still blinded by the media, by their own comfort or because they plainly just don’t want to see the truth. We Germans started it with Pegida and I was a proud member of the Berlin chapter for more than 30 demonstrations and I have even spoken 19 times in front of the people. I will never forget my 2nd speech, when they allowed me to speak right in front of the Brandenburg Gate in March 2015. I tried everything to help this movement gain more followers but well, too many people still don’t want to listen but love to call us Nazis and all the stuff. Oh, yes, I am a Nazi. A Nazi that is learning Chinese language in adult evening classes and who has friends online from all over the world, even Muslims. Muslims that told me that the movement I was supporting is righteous! Intelligent people know what has to be done and who the bad guys really are, only the stupid support our tyrannical government to the bitter end and believe everything TV and radio stations tell them.

Joe, it is time for all of us to wake up. Your country has the chance in doing so on 8th November and I hope dearly that Hillary will not become your president of your country. And either if she does then I hope that the outcome will be so close that there will be enough republican or independent senators in the senate, that will make sure that she will have a hard time to throw her hideous plans at your country. For the sake of America and especially for the sake of the world.

Did either the Highway Patrol, the State Police or the authorities having jurisdiction check to see if perhaps the neighbor pre-disposed to trespass (Mr. Givens) had mechanically tampered with Mr. Noggle’s vehicle which may have been cause for the accident? It sounds like Mr. Noggles was in poor health, but was his actual demise hastened by someone who had both motive and proximity access to prematurely cause his death? And now that Mr. Noggles is not able to testify on his own behalf, will the District Attorney prosecute Mr. Givens for his bad trespassing behavior including assault and aggravated burglary?
Who gets shot in the leg and then limps home to watch tv only to be discovered by the local police following up on a complaint so they can be charged with assault and aggravated burglary and afterwards receive medical attention? Too bad Mr. Noggles wasn’t able to aim a little higher at Mr. Givens’ center of mass and this story would have a much happier happy ending.

If Mr.Noggle’s car wreck , that caused his death, was related to his assault by Givens ?? Then Givens should be held accountable.

Thomas Paine, writing to religious pacifists in 1775:

“The supposed quietude of a good man allures the ruffian; while on the other hand, arms like laws discourage and keep the invader and the plunderer in awe, and preserve order in the world as well as property. The balance of power is the scale of peace. The same balance would be preserved were all the world destitute of arms, for all would be alike; but since some will not, others dare not lay them aside. Horrid mischief would ensue were one half the world deprived of the use of them; the weak would become a prey to the strong.”

I am sad to see that this good man just died a few days after he have saved his life. Anyway, he is a prime example on how important guns are for self-defense, especially for an old man that survived three strokes and two heart attacks, and maybe God wanted him to make this last message for all of us before releasing him from his physical suffering. Just my thoughts about this of course.

Remember guys, no matter how tough you are, you once become old and therefore be an easy target for bad guys that are as tough as you were 30 years ago. So again, guns save lives, remember this when you make your political vote on 8th November!

Greetings from a guy that lives in Germany, a country where neither young or old people can defend themselves against bad guys at all. And may this good man rest well and be a prime example, on how to survive best in a dangerous world, for all of us.

I lived in your country as a member of the Armed Forces in the mid-60’s and loved it. I would be afraid to live there now, sorry, no disrespect. Stay safe and hang tough as you can. I am older than the man in this article so I know the fear of being a victim is a lot greater at this age. I too, will not be one as long as I am armed.

      • Christian October 21, 2016, 3:59 pm

Hello JS, yes, you are absolutely right and I do fully understand your opinion. Since years I have decided to carry concealed pocket knives and even combat knives now as the cold days are coming in and I can carry a jacket with inside pockets again. It is forbidden to carry these things around, even concealed, but I don’t care and nobody is asking. The situation here is fully out of control, neither old nor young are safe, especially in the cities. If we would have a 2nd amendment there would be a way because even the pepper spray we can buy is officially only allowed to be used against animals, except for a life-threatening situation, but may God help you when you have to use it and you end up in front of a German courtyard. You will be denounced as a Nazi as soon as they can. This is like the 3rd Reich I guess, just from the other political side this time. I had a stun gun five years ago, still legal to buy, but it was cheaply made and someday just fell apart, so I decided to stick to knifes with glass breakers at the end of the handle. Gladly I never had to use them before but you never know. And I am shocked to see that your freedom is attacked every single day by anti-gunners. I hope your country will not make the same mistakes as Europe did. Keep your guns always, I’m sure I will keep my knives as well, as long as I have to live in this country because I hope for a chance to leave one day.
