A 76-year-old Florida homeowner woke up to find his wife being attacked last week, and shot the burglar in the shoulder.

76-Year-Olds Can Fight Too, You Know

According to the Miami Herald, police originally received a report of a crazed man “yelling in the street.”

Shortly after, a second 911 call reported a man attempting to burglarize the neighborhood.

Police arrived on the scene at 3:30 a.m. to find the man with a non-fatal gunshot wound to the shoulder.

74-year-old Sherry Treadwell was asleep on the couch when reports say a window was broken with a rock. The intruder, identified as 51-year-old Robert Jackson, began assaulting her.

Sherry’s husband, 76-year-old Randy Treadwell, woke to hear his wife screaming out for him. According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Randy grabbed his gun.

Randy shot at Jackson, hitting him in the right shoulder.

A neighbor, John Paul McCarthy, woke earlier in the night.

He sat in his driveway with his gun, prepared to defend himself, thinking, ‘In case he came towards me.’

According to Fox13, McCarthy witnessed Jackson throw the rock to enter the Treadwell home. After being shot, Jackson left the house and went across the street to a different home.

Crazy Or Stupid To Try It

Again, Jackson threw a rock into a window. According to WFLA, the window was made to withstand hurricanes, so it did not break.

Neighbors later claimed that Jackson seemed under the influence. “We couldn’t calm him down,” one said.

Police arrived soon after to find Jackson in the street with his gunshot wound bleeding. He was taken to a nearby hospital and his injuries were deemed non-fatal.

Jackson has been charged with “burglary with battery and attempted residential burglary,” according to WTSP News.

The neighborhood spent the morning cleaning blood and glass from front porches. McCarthy pointed out the strangeness of the night’s events.

“In 55 years here,” McCarthy said, “I don’t know of any crime we’ve had. You’ve got to be stupid to break in here.”

Imagine a community so secure that it would be foolish for criminals to even attempt any crime there.
