Troy’s 50 State Legal Side Action Rifle – SHOT Show 2018

Since its inception in 2003, Troy Industries has brought some very innovative products to market. In 2012, Troy began manufacturing military grade rifles that were met with great success. During the 2018 SHOT Show Troy, debuted the TROY Side Action Rifle (SAR).Troy's 50 State Legal Side Action Rifle - SHOT Show 2018

Innovations From Troy

The TROY Side Action Rifle is a 50-State Legal AR-patterned rifle. It lacks a gas block, gas tube, buffer and carrier key, which means the rifle is cycled by the end user. Since the rifle does not have a receiver extension, buffer and buffer spring, TROY was able to add a folding stock to the rifle. The side-charging bolt is topped with a target knob, and the pistol grip, controls, and trigger are all Mil-Spec. Troy machined the folding shoulder stock from aluminum billet.

Impressions

Troy envisioned this rifle for hunting, target shooting and backpacking. Picking up the Side Action Rifle I was intrigued. I have seen similar patterned rifles in Europe, but never one in the United States. The rifle was very light and, save for the charging handle, the controls were near identical to an AR-15. Since it is a bolt action rifle, it would be ideal for training a brand new shooter.

I could also see the Side Action Rifle being suitable as a lightweight precision rifle. If TROY offered this rifle in.224 Valkeryie or built an AR-10 patterned rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor, I could imagine myself running around a National Rifle League match carrying one. Since the rifle is a bolt-action, it would lend itself to suppressed use. The bolt and barrel could last a little bit longer than a traditional AR-15 due to the lack of gas port, decreased firing strings and lack of heat and mechanical stress from hot gas and buffer.

Pricing

The TROY Side Action Rifle will be available at the end of January and will have an MSRP of $899. If you live in a jurisdiction that does not allow semiautomatic AR-15s, or if you just want a stripped-down, AR-patterned rifle, look at the TROY Side Action Rifle. I hope TROY offers this rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor or .224 Valkryie in the near future. I would buy one.

Quite calling things like this 50 state legal. Anyone in a free state doesn’t give a crap about the abortions that are called firearms that can be purchased in slave states. Call them slave state models or Blue state bullshit, Marxist models. Dont like the truth then move but 50 state legal is just celebrating that a percentage of readers love their slavery.

  • William Walker January 30, 2018, 6:15 pm

Doesn’t Mossberg already make a bolt action that takes AR mags? Cost less than $900 too.

  • Ricky Price January 30, 2018, 12:38 pm

Give me a break.Single shot gun would be better.

  • Blue Dog January 30, 2018, 12:21 pm

While Troy is definitely being clever in helping people work around local restrictions against firearms, I would definitely fall into the “why bother” camp. 15 years ago or so – I think it was Century? – tried importing a pump Romanian AK-47 under similar reasoning advertised as California legal. I guess if you really, really wanted one of these soulless tinkertoys and your local jurisdiction has restrictions against them but I think even then it would be like having turkey bacon on a diet – sure, you are having something like bacon, but it just isn’t quite right. There is a Turkish company called Adler that makes some good looking shotguns – they look almost like Benellis if you squint – but they are bolt action and lever action. Why would anyone want that? Because you can own one in Australia.
But then again, I don’t even like semi-auto shotguns. Maybe because I am left-handed?

Maybe not illegal YET, but the anti-Constitution bastages of several states WILL ban this as soon as they hear about it.

Why, it has the evil muzzle device, the very evil pistol grip, the even more evil folding stock, probably even one of those ultimate evil “side-thingy-that-goes-up-and-down!”

AND ITS BLACK!! which is supremely evil, even tho that sounds “racist!” Remember, common sense is not a characteristic of liberals.

    • Toooo Funnny January 31, 2018, 7:03 pm

Sadly it’s to true … and if not for the weather and surf. I’d be gone.

  • Z January 30, 2018, 10:50 am

    “6.5 Valkeryie” ?

    • Thomas Gomez January 31, 2018, 11:58 pm

      Good catch. Corrected.

  • TROY January 30, 2018, 10:49 am

Why? Okay it almost looks cool, but for PSD 0 near useless- 870 would be far more useful in such a sit – and that is not saying much.

  • Norm Fishler January 30, 2018, 10:08 am

When you said “slide action” I automatically assumed a pump action which made sense because I know that right after the Assault Weapons Ban there were a number of AR manufacturers who put in R&D time on slide action ARs and AKs. What we are looking at here is a morph between the AR and the Swiss K-31.

    • TROY January 30, 2018, 10:42 am

Similar to the TROY Pump Action Rifle, the Side Action is a bolt action-style, side-pull repeater.

  • Jack January 30, 2018, 8:58 am

Why not just buy a Ruger American bolt action rifle .223 for under $300.00? This is about as dump as I’ve seen. Well, maybe the 870 shotgun with a magazine that holds 7 rounds is up there too!

    • Prez May 14, 2018, 1:51 am

Because I can reconfigure for semi-auto for about the same price?

  • Flep Vandergaard January 30, 2018, 8:07 am

I suspect that it’s ‘not legal’ under the NOT LEGAL guidelines of the Massachusetts Attorney General. I say this as it appears that it is built on a standard reciever, ie ‘readily convertible’. Just buy 80%ers, Mass residents, and your ammo in New Hampshire. Stockpile when for when you’ll need it.

    • TROY January 30, 2018, 10:33 am

The TROY SAR is not built on a standard AR receiver. Like the Pump Action Rifle lower, there is no gas system nor buffer tube. The upper and lower of the SAR are not interchangeable with those of the AR-15.

  • I'mOffendedTreatMeSpecial January 30, 2018, 7:55 am

Why not make it a pump gun? It should have been easy to design a sleeve over the forend with action bars like an 870. And with no gas system it would be a natural for an integral suppressor like the MP5-SD.

  • Anthony D Madden January 30, 2018, 7:43 am

It’s not 50 state legal. It has a flash hider that’s pinned and welded on and has a folding stock, both a NO in NJ…I would know 🙁

    • TROY January 30, 2018, 10:34 am

Ahhh, but it is! The New Jersey regulations apply to semi-automatic rifles. The TROY SAR is a single-shot, bolt action-style rifle (aka, straight pull repeater), the P&W flash hider and folding stock are both legal for NJ ownership in this configuration.

  • aljc77 January 30, 2018, 6:49 am

Just a rifle to remind us there are still rabid leftists in this nation that find a way to make everything suck a little more!

  • J-M January 30, 2018, 4:46 am

Man this is some futuristic stuff, never seen a rifle operated by a user manipulating the bolt after every shot, it’s like it requires action on the bolt, maybe we could call it a “bolt-action” man this is gonna be revolutionary…..

  • shrugger January 30, 2018, 3:13 am

Thank God I live in a free State.

  • JOE January 29, 2018, 1:28 pm

is it legal in New York?

    • I'mOffendedTreatMeSpecial January 30, 2018, 8:53 am

      The magazine is not.

    • TROY January 30, 2018, 10:35 am

Yes, it is legal in all 50 states, including New York.

  • John H Baumgaertner January 28, 2018, 10:56 pm

You said 3 times it’s a “single-shot rifle.” It is not a single shot rifle. It’s a straight-pull repeater. Troy isn’t clear about whether it uses standard AR magazine, but it does come with a 10-rd magazine.

    • Laura Kovarik January 28, 2018, 11:33 pm

You are correct! Thank you for calling the error to our attention. It has been corrected to ‘bolt-action rifle.’

    • Thomas Gomez January 29, 2018, 2:54 am

It will run with a standard Ar-15 magazine.

      • TROY January 30, 2018, 10:36 am

Yes. It ships with a 10-round TROY BattleMag and will run on your current AR-15 mags.
