When I finally got my hands on the P320 X-Five in the wild, I was absolutely amazed. After several months of testing, I crowned it the new King of Polymers, a judgment I stand by. But the X5 isn’t the only trick Sig had up a sleeve. The X5 also has a little brother, called the P320 X-Carry and it was everything I expected it to be.
The X-Carry shares a trigger (or chassis) with the X5, which means, in this case, the best out of the box striker fired trigger on the market. The grip module is the same as the X5, sans the flared mag well. This grip module is unique to the X family, and offers a higher grip than the regular P320, along with an extended beavertail. Having shot both of these guns for a minute now, I finally figured out how to equate that. It is like gripping a polymer CZ-75, which SIG should take as a high compliment.
Aside from a shorter barrel and slide (3.9 inches in place of 5), and the aforementioned mag well, there are a few differences. The X-Carry features tritium night sights, instead of the fiber optic style of the X5. There is still a removable rear plate in case you would like a red dot instead, just like it’s big brother. The X5 features a bull barrel, while the X-Carry has a regular diameter barrel. In a CCW gun, every ounce counts. And really, that is about it.

You will notice I didn’t say there was a capacity difference. The grip length is identical, which also makes it dimensionally the same as a Glock 19X. There has been a lot of chatter about how this is dumb, and how we should have longer slides with shorter grips. I could not disagree more. I like the 4-inch barrel with a full-length grip, effectively a Commander sized polymer. It fits a niche, and an important one. Why anyone would want a 6-inch slide on a subcompact frame is beyond me.
The size, in my mind, makes the X-Carry the pickup truck of guns. It might not do any one job perfectly, but it does every job well. A longer sight radius and heavier barrel are useful for gun games, no doubt. But you can get it done with this sight set up, and the barrel is more accurate already than 99.9% of shooters can exploit, myself included. The grip length is just a little past a compact, and thus a tiny bit harder to conceal. But if you get in a firefight, the added meat on the frame means better control, and therefore faster hits. 17+1 of capacity means it can solve problems a mouse gun can’t, and a full-size grip is easier to reload. And, if you do need to stick it in your pants, the diminished barrel length is easier to carry.
Performance wise, the X-Carry is a champion. I was consistently amazed at how easy the gun is to shoot, and how well it manages recoil. There is a light texturing on the grip, which is just enough to help you hang onto it. As a duty gun, it could use some more aggressive stippling. But as an all-purpose gun, the texture won’t rub you raw IWB.
If you could own but one pistol, this would be an excellent candidate. What would you choose if you could only have one?

I have the 320 x-compact w/a WC grip frame – great shooter! CZ P10C is another phenomenal weapon. My preferred CCW (most of the time) is G26. Good video, nice shooting! Semper Fi!
Only one…….g19 due to parts and mags in a SHTF scenario. I have never been one for believing in those until recently. I have to work in an area that has been basically having weekly riots. I have been carrying my 19 for that because the security guards and the swat officers also carry 9mm Glocks.
But because I’m not limited:
I have the p320 x compact and a regular compact and edc a P365 most of the time (when I’m not at that crazy location). I like the regular p320 better than Glock (slightly). They are my 1 and 2 favorites, however IMO the x series are the best polymer striker fired pistols period. I agree 100% with Clay.
Beretta M9A3
Glock 19X
357 mag Revolver
😉
If I could have only one handgun, period, it would be my Colt King Cobra. Shoots every time, hits where I aim every time. That being said, I carry an m&p2.0 for EDC. Will probably buy a 320 X-Carry just to have, but if things ever go 100% haywire, my King Cobra is my go to weapon of choice.
The track record is infinitely better for the Glock. There is no comparison in my opinion. I’m not bashing SIG, I carry a SIG P229 (which has an equally impressive track record), but the Army obviously made a mistake that was demonstrated during the Production Verification Testing (PVT). As of earlier this year, the Army was still having trouble with the pistol (as reported by the DOD).
Definitely doesn’t have a great track record…. yet. Remember, this gun is still a baby in the market, relative to other behemoths(like you mentioned). Even still, I think Sig really messed up in quality control in terms of the M17/18, luckily I have been hearing that those issues have,by in large been resolved. However, in terms of the standard P320, I think the guns only hiccup is the drop-testing, which is hard to blame them for… Its requires an exceptionally perfect scenario, and as such, it passed all the tests from third party vendors for drop testing.. That being said, they could have handled it better publicly.
I love my P320, I think they have figured the gun out in terms of reliability, and I am excited to see it(hopefully), be welcomed more enthusiastically by the gun community in the future.
I doubt very much that there is a pistol on the market that has a better track record than Glock. Carried one for 29 years as a duty weapon. 1,000’s of rounds fired with no malfunctions. Only malfunctions were from limp wrists or poor reloads. I own Sig’s, HK’s and other firearms but when it comes to a fight Glock is my first choice.
If I could only own one, I would be a very unhappy SOB.
I would have to say, a design from John Browning and perfected by Samuel Colt would be my Colt .45ACP Combat Commander. Tried and true for 107 years of reliability. I own an assortment of handguns, but when I walk out the door I have my Colt at my side…..Unless it’s hunting season, then I carry a S&W 629 Classic .44 Mag.
ONLY one? How to pick one from the 25 or thirty that I own??? Well in the end what pistols are made for is the same function the sword once did. To fight other men. In that regard the very best one ever created was the Glock 17. Sure I have pretty much all Glocks and I love shooting my G20, and Browning High Powers and my Colt custom Gold Cup shoots like a rifle, the sig 226 is also a fun gun. BUT we are saying ONLY one. So that would be that same Glock 17. In semi-auto if you have much training you can fire it almost as fast as a full-auto and with more accuracy and it NEVER fails. I have on two occasions fired one 10,000 rounds without cleaning or lubing the gun at all and at the end of those 10,000 rounds it was still shooting straight and never missing a beat. In probably 200,000 rounds the only time one of them has had a problem was when I was playing and while limp wresting one tried doing the gangsta side way shooting. That Glock is a serious combat weapon and did NOT like my tom-foolery. Got a stove pipe. Certainly the Glock 17 is not a target gun and you cannot shoot itti-bitty patterns at even 25 yards, BUT its accuracy is not MOA it is MOM (Moment of Man) I have not tried this pistol you report, but it would have to be some kind of wonderful if it was as fast and usable as a Glock and NEVER failed to work whether wet, muddy, or having not been cleaned in 10,000 rounds. Anyone fired that thing those same 10,000 rounds without cleaning it?
I have a Sig P320 X-Carry and its everything that Clay says and more. One of the best shooting pistols I have ever owned.
That’s nice, for a semi auto handgun. At least I guess it is. If I could only have one hand gun though, I’ll keep my Ruger GP-100. Simple, robust and absolutely reliable. I guess I’ll always be a revolver guy. Sure it’s only got 6 rounds capacity but I have speedloaders. Maybe I should keep the Redhawk instead. Hmmm. What a dilemma. I’d hate to use it to hunt rabbits but it could be used for that. I could use it to hunt bears too. I suppose you could with a 9mm but I will wait inside the tank while you do.
If I absolutely had to pick a semi auto, I think I’ll stick with my Ruger Mk II. It has a modified slide release and it’s dead on accurate at any distance I think I’d ever have to shoot at someone if I ever was in that situation. Ammo is cheap cheap cheap, compared to 9mm and one shot in the forehead with either one will put a perp out of business. Yes I know I’m supposed to aim for center of mass, so it’s also easier to double tap with a 22 than a 9mm.
“If only” scenarios are so much fun sometimes. We can let our imaginations run wild.
I love my 1911’s and my Sigs (220, 226, 229 and 2022) and decided to do a side by side comparison for my new carry weapon of the 320 X Carry and Sphinx SDP Compact Alpa. It was a tough decision but I went with the Sphinx. So very accurate, smooth trigger in DA and SA, not much heavier than the Sig and only give up two rounds (carry a CZ75 17 rounder as spare). Can carry in any location, i.e. appendix, no strikers for me there. Only downside is the sights. Better sights on the Sig but that’s easily fixed in the Sphinx with XS Night Sights. After all that though funds available will probably still pickup the X Carry. If only one though Sphinx SDP all the way.
Tried many over the years from Sig to Colt. Revolvers and Auto.. Right now think my Defender, my S&W Shield, and little Kimber Micro. Will probably never know. too many left to try… 🙂 Only problem is have to sell one or two to buy one or two more
Tried a lot over the years from Sig to Colt. Right now like my Colt Defender, My S&W Shield, and my little Kimber Micro.. Guess I never will have a favorite. Too many left to try.. 🙂
I understand you need to sell guns … If i could only have one pistol it would be my Browning High Power. After over 30,000 rounds without a failure (except for a few hand loaded rounds where the primer flipped over) its still going strong. I’ve won combat matches with it, carried it for personal defense and still pick it over a very nice collection of other handguns.
Glad you liked it. I have the other X gun, the X VTAC and I simply love it.
Only one? Glock 20. Bugger to conceal in the summer, though. However, you can hunt with it, etc.
I don’t own it yet but I want to buy an HK VP9 sk or HK P30 sk 9mm….any suggestions?
I have the VP9sk. It’s a great gun, and I didn’t think anything else would beat it’s features. I bought an X-Carry some time ago, and for many reasons, never had a chance to shoot it until last weekend. I can tell you, the X-Carry beats the SK, and leaves my 19X in the dust, too. The trigger is amazing, and the whole package just feels right in the hand. As Clay said, they have tamed the recoil to a bare minimum with this gun. I did not expect it to shoot like it does. I can’t wait to go shoot it some more. I am certain, if you try an X-Carry, you will have the same reaction.
I loved my P320 too until the trigger upgrade. Now I’m not happy with the trigger. Sent it back to Sig and all they will say is that it is in spec.
If you get a Sig, hope you don’t need customer service.
Damn, Clay ! What did you do to your X-Five – drag it behind a truck ?
Does anybody else see an evolution between the BDA-45 and this gun? Back in the 1970’s Browning marketed a Sig-Sauer but it was not at all popular. Perhaps it was its price or the novelty of the gun, at the time. It appeared to be well made, but back in the 0’s, I did not like a double action pistol because of the trigger.
That Browning was a Sig P220 and single stack single/double action nothing like the striker fired double stack P320 series.
If I could only own 1 handgun there’s at least half a dozen I could choose from and feel perfectly all warm and fuzzy.
In the spirit of full disclosure, I am a Sig fan from the git-go. That’s not to say that I don’t own other makes: Colt, Para-Ordnance, Dan Wesson, Glock. But 99% of the time the others sit in storage and it’s a Sig that I carry and rely on to protect my loved ones.
In olden times, before that unspeakable Hillary Hole appeared, I was equally enamored with Smith & Wesson revolvers, especially those that chambered the .44 or .41 magnums. I was a civilian peace officer back then and was on our fugitive felon unit; we were free to carry any handgun we wanted and my choice was a Model 29, 6.5″ barrel–before Dirty Harry came along–carried in a 5-slot pancake holster made for me by Roy Baker.
Anyway, I don’t claim to be an expert but I have carried a handgun almost every day since the early 60’s, either as a cop, an Army weapons and tactics instructor, and as a private citizen. I’ve seen the good, the bad and the very ugly in the firearms arena, and formed my opinions through heavy use.
But I digress. These days I carry one of my Sig P320s (a Carry in .357 Sig) or what is in my humble opinion the best .45 ACP I’ve ever shot or owned, the Sig C3 with Crimson Trace laser grips. If I had to choose just one of those two, I suppose it’s the C3. It’s lightweight, compact, has a superb trigger and after about 1,500 rounds has never malfunctioned on me. Not once. I have complete confidence in it.
And in my seasoned years, a pistol like that is just easier for me to carry.
My P320 Carry is a great pistol, too, and I never feel undergunned when carrying it. I’m still not completely sold on polymer pistols, but the P320 series may yet seal the deal.
Anyway, those are my thoughts and opinions, your mileage may vary.
I have two 320s and love them. I have a Compact and a Sub-Compact that have been reworked a little with APEX parts, after the safety recall work was done. I prefer the old style grip frame to the X models, so I won’t be buying the new ones. But as to the question “if you could have only one gun” I would just keep my S&W 686, 5″, 3-5-7 TALO revolver. It does everything from .38s on paper to .357mag for deer size game. Might not conceal all that great … but if I could have only one….
You guys are a bunch of whiners!!!!! Try the Sig X-carry at a range that offers the availability to try before you buy and see how it feels. I did, and I bought it!!! Glocks are great but compared to any Glock in the same size, it’s not even close. But opinions are like buttholes, and I think most of yours stink!!! LOL . Keep up the good work Clay, I agree the Sig X series guns are above anything that Glock has “out of the box”. The triggers are phenomenal and have a short take up and seriously tight break. I guess since I can afford this gun then I am in the wrong. Oh well .
That’s why I take regular showers and wash it. ROFL. Thanks for the laughs.
Hi.. My names Fudd.
I’m an addict… I’m hooked on the 1911. I’ll admit it, I’m an addict. Sure it’s heavy but if I’m out of ammo I can still beat you to death with it.
Sorry guys, but if it had to be only one ‘pistol’, it would be the one I carried most of the time for some serious ‘work’ back in the days which was a tricked select fire 9mm Mac 10, with a short but effective compensator with the original compact wire form collapsible stock, which easily fits nice and comfy in a shoulder holster or standard hip belt holster. And it’s easy to tune these for excellent reliability if you know what you’re doing. Used to prefer the Israeli Uzi special purpose high velocity rounds but with the newest barrier blind high tech 9mm rounds now available with enhanced terminal hydrostatic shock effect, it can take on all comers in high speed CQB. Using this Mac rig Clay could probably squeeze in another bad guy target in his multiple assailant routine there within the same elapsed time, and get a couple more hits on each target from the spit-bursts with this choice as well. And, of course, with the stock extended turning the pistol into a carbine sub gun, you can reach out a bit more reliably and accurately with the nice micro dot optics available now?
But Alas, We, the about to be enslaved Sheeple, are not allowed to possess such optimal options within our own ‘shall not be infringed’ preference, in this fast emerging totalitarian social prison system. (sigh) And nobody seems to give a fat fuck.
Clay, because of the price disparity of this Sig copy of the popular G-19, you would have to account for that by having a side by side performance/advantage comparison to prove that the Sig is enough of an improvement over the Glock to justify that cost?
And keep up the great video work. And don’t listen to these fashion trolls like Robert Judy here. He sounds like old J. Edgar Hoover era with one of his old FBI appearance fetishes. Hey Robert, after you have your ‘hair’ done at the beauty shop, do you go straight home to mommy to clean your pink theme pistol and make sure you change your matching ejaculation stained pink panties, too???
Yep. If people don’t stop voting for politicians they KNOW don’t keep their promises, we will become ever more enslaved and most folks will be more comfortable being told what to do and when. If you look at history, the revolution against King George III was done by far less than 50% of the people who should have been fighting him.
Those sheeple will be comfortable right up till they are gathered up and stuck into ovens and camps just like in Germany and Russia, China, Korea, Cambodia, etc. Cambodia had the highest percentage of it’s people killed of any of the communist/socialist countries that I know of. Or maybe we can recreate the conditions in Venezuela and have the average citizen lose 25 pounds because they can’t get food.
Your credibility, with me, was waning and it just ran out. AMF
Great review, I feel the same way about this pistol. I was a bit skeptical when I bought mine but I’d heard so many great things about this pistol from friends I went ahead and got one. If anything, the review was rather modest about how excellent this pistol actually is – it is the easiest, most accurate and flattest shooting pistol I’ve fired in over forty years and I’ve fired dozens. I was shocked. Near effortless hits over and over, 17 or 21 rd mags, excellent trigger and it comes with Sig’s green tritium Xray sights (made by TruGlo). I don’t know how Sig could have made this pistol any better! Oh yeah! You can switch grip modules if you want to by removing the fire control unit, barrel and slide! Or you can easily remove the rear sight plate and attach a Sig Romeo red dot sight without any modifications if the mood suits you.
It’s easily the best striker fired pistol in it’s class – that’s coming from someone who owns one and has put over 1000 rds through it so far. What an absolute joy to shoot and it comes with three 17 rd mags, not two. Zero malfunctions so far and yes, there are already some aftermarket accessories available from Apex and GrayGuns. Slap a P320 carry grip module on and you have a fancy M18. It’s small enough for CCW with either grip module too. This pistol sells for about $730 right now – NOT the MSRP of $832 and in time it will be even less. Obviously all the naysayers haven’t spent any time with this great pistol so try it – you’ll be shocked at how amazing it really is. I too was a “metal only” pistol owner and polymer hater my whole life until now and I’m sure glad I saw the light. Yes, there are less expensive pistols out there but the X Carry will easily out shoot and out perform any of them. Don’t knock it until you try it – or stick with second best. Sig hit a home run with this handgun!
It is only $862. How can you trust any gun that costs less than $1500?
What’s to trust?
Guns are like a bottle of wine — they are only worth what some dummy at the counter is willing to pay for it
I prefer my Beretta PX4 Storm sub compact 13+1 and under $600. Safety, hammer. I have owned 1 Sig which Sig purist will say was not actually a Sig but a GSG. A Mosquito. Well guess what , it said Sig on the side and it was a BAD gun. Poor support from Sig. And by the way how about putting on a clean( not coffee stained ) t shirt , and get a haircut. You look like a homeless person
Really??? He’s not going to church. He’s out in the field which you can easily tell from looking at the background. Unless your hair is quite short it will get messy in the field and so what if he spilled a bit of coffee on the ride out there. You want him to abort a trip and drive home to get a clean shirt so he can talk about guns? I think your priorities need a bit of adjusting. What’s important is what he’s saying, not how he looks.
Robert Judy you think because a stained shirt and long hair means u dont know guns.Wow u are an idiot. The Sig u had is junk .Everyone knows that. But your BEretta is ok .I had one .Not even in the same ball park as the X Carry.Do your homework before making yourself look stupid.
Did you see the suggested retail price? Sorry, but I’ll take the proven Glock for half the price. As a police officer I’ve owned and carried on duty both Glock and Sig, and have put them both through the test. I’ll take the Glock any day over Sig considering the price difference and proven reliability. How long has Glock used Striker Fire and Polymer? Everybody ridiculed them for years and now everyone is copying them. WTF!
If you have to worry about the price, Don’t plan on a Sig anything. Stay with your Glock. “To hell and back reliability” comes with a price.
If I could only own one………….. I’ll keep my Glock G26. Very concealable.
You know, it’s just so short-sighted to say “this is THE HANDGUN you need to carry”; blah blah blah…..B.S.
The weapon you need to carry is the one you are competent with, and (above all else) know WHEN in terms of the law, you are justified in using it. There are too many people who carry sidearms and are not really competent with them; but worst of all, don’t know how to recognize circumstances under which drawing and firing a weapon is justified. This article also ignores the importance of the selection of the most correct round for personal defense; drawing some kind of assumption that a 9mm is the universally accepted “magic bullet”. Personally Clay, I’m starting to think you’ll write anything for anyone who manages to win you over , or pad your pocket. Don’t tell me to stop reading this junk because I already have.
I can always tell an armchair ranger or couch commander when they say stupid shit excuses for their lack of ability. You know, Paul, ‘it’s just so short sighted’ to say that you only need to carry ‘the weapon you are competent with’ ? B.S. Paul. The weapon you need to carry is the BEST ONE YOU CAN FIND THAT YOU CAN AFFORD. And yes, Virginia, guns, can be said to be like women. There’s no such thing as a bad one, especially when you ‘need’ one, but in the long run, some are just much better than others.
So your logic is flawed, Paul. Some of us, like Clay, here. are competent, and well beyond, with virtually any and all weapons. Thus the only ‘limitations’ in performance might be more the fault of the particular disadvantages or deficiencies of the firearm.
In other words, wouldn’t it make more sense, your mind not withstanding, Paul…to have the most superior firearm you can and make yourself rise to the level of ‘competence’ it takes to be ‘competent’ with that type of weapon, because in an area of reality dynamics like gunfighting where mechanical advantage coordinates with skill level to provide the best case advantages where the absence of either can enhance likelihood of your death, Why would anyone but a lazy nitwit be satisfied with ‘competence’ with an inferior firearm when he doesn’t have to be, and shouldn’t be if you respect the entire purpose of carrying a firearm?
I think that’s all Clay is trying to present here. And it’s his ‘expert’ empirical knowledge and experience that we are interested in here, unlike your opinions, which are clearly skewed if you are so ‘short- sighted’ or perhaps just ignorant to realize that nowhere in the presentation did Clay express or imply that the 9mm round is any ‘universally accepted magic bullet’. So why are you implying that he is telling us that? So it must be than anally retentive .45 ACP syndrome so many amateur gunslingers have?
But for your badly needed edification, it so happens that war history, police shoot out history and other documented evidence proves without qualification that a properly loaded 9mm round and bullet for CQB would be high on the list of ‘most correct round for self-defense’ virtually all scenarios. So yes, even though Clay did not imply or express that it was, the assumption that, indeed, the 9mm automatic round is a verifiable ‘universally accepted’ magic bullet, would be correct.
But if you’re merely just ‘competent’ with your sidearm, well then, it really doesn’t matter that much what ammo you use, because the most important aspect of firearm self-defense, as even beginners are encouraged to learn, is that even a 44 magnum wouldn’t work if you can’t guarantee hitting your target with it.
But if you never miss, like Clay demonstrated here, then it really doesn’t matter ‘what’ cartridge you use. And good 9mm rounds in a top notch high capacity pistol would always rise to any occasion for you.
I have several nice competition pistols, but if I could have only one I’d choose my 9MM XDs. I carry it along with a spare 9 round mag all the time. I think the M&P Shield would be a good option as well as the Glock 43, but the G43 has one less round. This size pistol fits inside the waistband, on my ankle, or in a pocket holster in a pinch. I’d like to try a G19 or CZ P10C size pistol, but I don’t think it would be as comfortable, and I’d definitely be restricted to inside the waistband only. Just my opinion….
The reviewer says the gun has “the best out of the box striker fired trigger.” What does that mean? Statements like “good” trigger, “best” trigger, etc. are adjectives that express opinions, not facts. Reviewers need to learn how to describe trigger pull in terms of weight and travel distance. Terms like “crisp” or “mushy” can be subjective, too, but nonetheless helpful because they at least describe a perception of an objective reality. For readers, real facts are preferable to unsubstantiated opinions.
Canik Elite for half the price!
$862???? Are you kidding? There are guns just as good for a lot less, Glock 19, FN 509, Walther PPQ. Again, SIG goes for the elitist gun crowd, thinking they are buying a Porsche, but getting a VW at Porsche prices. I was interested in the P365 until I held one and asked the selling price.
Nope. Way too expensive for what it is. My choice is a Glock 23 with a storm lake drop in 9mm conversion barrel. One gun but two caliber choices, 9mm or 40sw.
These tricks and schemes to “improve” handguns are puff.
Is it damn ; California approved?
Clay, is there any interchangability from the full size model to the carry model? If I wanted to carry a full size frame but a shorter bbl for carry, but be able to switch to a longer slide for comps or just for the heck of it? I guess this is playing on the glock 19/17 size subject.
Is that full-size in 3rd pic a DIY attempt at so-called “battle-worn” finish or what? It looks like somebody’s been wearing gloves made out of sandpaper.
I was thinkIng that looked worn look. was kinda phony .just trying to figure out why . My military colt made in 1914 looks better than that and it’s seen it all.
ATE HUNNERD SIXTY TWO DOLLERZ!!!
If I could only own one handgun… why does this cause such internal turmoil? Feels worse than the struggle between revolver vs semi-auto…
…all those dots means I’m sitting here staring at the screen… Okay, if I could only own one handgun, it would be the Glock 32, and if only one accessory was available, a G23 barrel
Is this a better version than the original, which felt like a plastic piece of junk when I handled it?
I’ no Fudd, but I do believe in .45 acp. My old Combat Commander saved my life twice on streets of Detroit, later switched to G21. But a G26 was my back up.
If You Could Only Own One —- Don’t give the left ideas …….. : )
“Why anyone would want a 6-inch slide on a subcompact frame is beyond me.” That’s beyond me too. What manufacturer offers that configuration?
I could see a 4″ slide on a sub-compact or compact frame. Personally, I’m not able to conceal a full-sized frame easily.
For concealed carry, the G19X makes no sense. Then again, that gun wasn’t intended for that market.
Thanks for the review, Clay.
