Original Broomhandle Mauser built by the Nationalist Chinese , Caliber 45 ACP!! Designated Type 17, production on the .45 caliber handgun began in 1929 at the Taiyuan Arsenal. . They are inscribed (in Chinese) "Type 17" on the left hand side of the gun, and "Republic Year Eighteen, Made in Shansei on the right hand side. The Shansi .45 pistols are noticeably bigger than their 7.63mm counterparts, with the 10-round magazine extending below the trigger guard. It is loaded using two 1903 Springfield stripper clips which will hold five the 45 ACP rounds each. Most of the Shansi .45 pistols were melted down after the Communist victory in the Chinese Civil War. A few were exported as Military aid to Vietnam in the 1960’s and some were offered overseas for sale on the commercial market. Approximately 8,500 Shansi .45 caliber Broomhandle pistols are believed to have been produced by the Taiyuan Arsenal. There was a brief period in which the chinese resumed making some of the famous Mauser pistols but these had different markings and they were made in 9mm. This pistol is in very good condition with a very decent bore, The bluing is fading to a gray finish, and the grips are light in color. Truly a unique pistol for the serious collector.
