Since the 908 was of the last men standing among Smith & Wesson metal frame revolvers; and since it is almost identical to the highly desirable 3913 Ladysmith, we were happy when this one’s Decatur County Tennessee exclusive civilian owner decided to trade it in on a high capacity FN Pistol. This is the first one we have found since S&W made a last-gasp run of them in 2008. Concern over the trends in compact handguns are twofold with us. Plastic guns are far from traditional, and consumers are wary of Glocks and their clones, fine guns though they may be, because there are no manually operated safeties. Smith & Wesson 39 and 59 series pistols, of which the 908 is a representative, have always had three manual safeties: the main safety lever / decocker; the firing pin block that prevents the weapon from firing when it is dropped – even nose down from a plane on concrete, and the magazine safety that prevents the weapon from firing, even with a live round in the barrel and the safety off, so long as the magazine is removed. Rather than continue with those complexities, our customer opted for a Smith & Wesson Revolver. This pistol is traditional double action, meaning that its hammer stands in cocked position after the first shot, and the safety acts as a decocker when the operator decides to stop firing. Barrel length is only 3 1/2 inches, and the weight of this pistol is only 24 ounces empty. It is stainless steel slide and coated alloy frame. Sight configuration is 3 dot white. Surface detractions are negligible on this specimen. We only detect a small amount of slide contact buffing on the barrel’s chamber hood. We rate it as Excellent, Near Mint in Box; but photos ought to suffice for our shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is certainly excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. It is in its original box with its instruction manual, engraving ad brochure, and fired brass case signed by technicial Allen Wajda on August 12, 2003. In addition to its two original issue magazines, one flat plate and one curved plate, it has a 3rd magazine with a steel floorplate.
