The P-83 pistol, chambered for 9x18mm Makarov and designed by Ryszrd Chelmicki and Marian Gryszkiewicz, was developed during the early 1980s at the state-owned Z.M. Lucznik arms factory in Radom and replaced the P-64 pistol as the standard sidearm for the Polish military and police. The P-83 (officially designated as the 9 mm pistolet wz. 1983) provided some improvements over the previous P-64 service pistol in terms of both cost and combat effectiveness and is still in limited use.
