The Colt Lightweight Commander is an aluminum-alloy framed, 1911-style semi-automatic pistol with a 4.25 in stainless barrel and a carbon steel blued slide with black anodized frame. It ships with checkered G10 grips (Black Cherry on many configurations), Novak front and low-mount rear sights, an extended thumb safety and an upswept beavertail grip safety. The design follows the traditional Series 70 1911 pattern in a shorter Commander-length package suitable for carry and sport shooting.
Factory-claimed magazine capacities are 8+1 in .45 ACP and 9+1 in 9mm for Commander-length magazines. The Lightweight Commander is offered in multiple chamberings and finishes and is positioned by Colt for everyday carry and competition/sport use.
