Up for auction this time is a rather unique offering: an Astra 400 in 9mm Largo. These were designed in the early 1920's for the Spanish army that was attempting to keep up with advancements in small arms designs in other countries. Although it looks peculiar to us today, this design was a logical outgrowth of previous European designs, and is, despite its odd looks, a stout and reliable pistol. The 9mm Largo typically shoots a 124 grain bullet at around 1150-1200 ft/sec. This round is till commercially available, and falls somewhere between the 9mm Luger and the 38 Super. These were highly thought of by the Spanish, and in fact other countries bought this pistol for their armies as well. It was even used by the Nazis during WW 2. It has an 8-round magazine with a heel release. It is an all steel, no-nonsense pistol. This one has had a deep cleaning and reconditioning: it is fully functional with new grips. The Spanish crest on the barrel is clear and sharp as are the military proofs. The pistol is in excellent condition, and would make a fun addition to any collection.
