1940 Colt M1911A1 U.S. Navy s/n 720337 This pistol is specifically listed by serial number on the Springfield Research Service database as being delivered to the U.S. Navy 8 January 1941. There is a grouping of 1940 Colt pistols listed on records in the National Archives. "720337 010841 NAV OP BASE NORFOLK (DELIVERED)" is the exact information shown in the SRS database. This pistol still has what are believed to be all original parts, except for the Colt large G barrel. Barrels were often replaced in pistols and the slight damage on this barrel may indicate it was the barrel in the pistol prior to restoration. This pistol would have originally had a Colt small G barrel. The finish of the pistol and magazine has been professionally restored and very closely resembles the original Colt brushed blue finish. There were only 4696 total Colt M1911A1 pistols procured in 1940. C.S.R. final inspected Colts are among the hardest to acquire. There were only ca. 35,000 brushed blue Colt M1911A1 pistols and less than 20% (4696) of those were from 1940. Much of the 720000-721000 serial range is documented to have gone to the U.S. Navy as the U.S. prepared for World War II. an original finish 1940 U.S. Navy pistol in the same condition would be priced about 3X as high.
