Seller Description
I purchased this gun used from a gunsmith in 1974. I added a new Western Field 4 x 33 scope and a leather sling. As I only hunted with this rifle four times (successfully) and fired it on a range a few times in my 40 years of ownership, virtually all of its wear and tear came before I bought it. I have had no problems with the gun. I have kept it oiled and in dry storage. The slide action, action release, safety etc. all perform well. The plastic magazine tube adapter is intact.
The serial number is A505184 stamped on the lower left of the receiver. Also stamped on the receiver is SAVAGE MODEL 170, SAVAGE ARMS, WESTFIELD MASS. U.S.A. On the right side of the 22 inch barrel is stamped PROOF TESTED BAL. 30-30.
The receiver shows some pitting. The stock and forepece show minor scratching, but no splits or chips. The paint on the trigger housing is chipped. The "finish" on the metal parts is as pictured. I don't know what a new one looked like. I understand that Savage based this gun on their popular .410 shotgun. The 170 was produced from 1970-1981.
In a side by side accuracy test including bolt actions in Outdoor Life Magazine in the 1970's, the 170 ranked in the top few. I have shot 3" groups at 100 yards.
