Competition among medium frame .44 caliber double action revolvers involves three companies: Charter, Smith & Wesson, and Taurus. Charter frames simply will not stand the pressure for the Magnum round. Smith & Wessons are all relatively huge cylindered, even their Night Guard series. This is the Taurus’s Tracker, numbered model 44C, the perfect solution for a manageably sized big bore revolver. Manufacturer is Forjas Taurus S.A. of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Importer is Taurus International of Miami. Construction is entirely steel, with the exception of the shock absorbent Taurus Ribber combat grips. Type is traditional double and single action revolver. Frame is K size, in Smith & Wesson terminology, medium frame. Capacity is five rounds of .44 Smith & Wesson Special or .44 Remington Magnum ammunition, interchangeably. Barrel is 4 inch Full Lug, recessed with four ports on either side of the front sight to control muzzle climb. Finish is classic Taurus dark blue, with matte finish atop the frame and barrel for reduced glare. Front sight is integral serrated ramp type with OSHA Orange inlay, with windage and elevation adjustable, white outline rear sight. Hammer and trigger are 1980s style case colored, .400 smooth faced trigger and .400 medium spur length Target Hammer. Weight empty is only 34 ounces, with center of gravity at the trigger. This revolver is what we call a factory demo, most likely a sales rep’s showgirl that pulled display duty at trade shows like the annual SHOT show in Las Vegas. Surface detractions are negligible, not as much as we’ve seen happen in our own shop for display guns, faint amounts of cylinder rotation marking and carbon deposits on the cylinder face that are common with brand new Tauruses. It comes in its factory case with protective papers, sight protector, two keys for its hammer lock, instruction manual, and a factory registration card.
