Seller Description
During World War II, pilots carried aluminum framed Smith & Wesson and Colt Revolvers known as the Air Crewman. The popularity of the Air Weight series continued after the war, as veterans and civilians alike demanded and carried the popular Smith & Wesson Chief's Special Airweight, Centennial Airweight, and Bodyguard Airweights in .38 Special caliber from the 1950s onward, with increasing demand for stainless finished pocket guns. It was not until the Millennial Year, however, that Smith & Wesson introduced its first .357 Magnum Air Lite, weighing in at only 12 ounces empty. The company achieved this new level of a combination of light weight and Magnum power by designing an aluminum and scandium alloy frame fitted with a stainless flame shield on the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel's forcing cone, and producing the cylinder out of black finished stainless on this 13.3 ounce variant. This, then, is the descendant of the 42 and 642 variants more than it is of the model 40. Photo shows a Brand New in box Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum Airlite Military & Police Centennial, the M&P 340 with factory Trijicon Front Night Sight and steel cylinder that we had in stock at the turn of the year, 2009. The difference between this and the 340PD is less than 2 ounces. Factory specs are Double Action Only; caliber .357 Magnum; internal transfer bar safety with internal lock and two keys; 5 round capacity; Trijicon Tritium luminous front Night Sight and fixed notch rear sight; weight empty 13.5 ounces; Hogue / S&W Bantam boot style grip; black finish scandium alloy frame and black stainless cylinder. We recommend the double action only Centennial type revolvers like this one so that frightened home defenders will not get into the habit of backing the hammer when they suspect an intrusion. The only way this revolver will fire is with a firm, deliberate double action trigger pull. Replacement price on this revolver in our area is well over $800.00.
