Numbered model is 27, 8th Engineering Change. The early specimens from the 1930s were shipped direct to their owners with a certificate of factory registration, so they were "Registered Magnums." In 2007, Mr. Lew Horton decided to resurrect a limited run of the Registered Magnum Guns. Manufacturer was the Performance Center division of Smith & Wesson. Exclusive distributor was Lew Horton Distributing of Westboro, MA. Type is traditional double and single action revolver. Construction is entirely steel metal, with Magna Service Size, Laminated Rosewood grips. Frame size is Large, N Frame, with Square Butt Grip Frame that is serrated fore and aft. Barrel is one piece 3 1/2 inch tapered, .603 outside diameter at the muzzle to .764 at the frame junction. Bore is five groove right hand 1:18.75 rifling. Sights are barrel integral solid rib with pinned in serrated blade front blade; and late style rounded front removable, windage and elevation adjustable rear sight with black blade. Solid rib, frame top, and sight base are all cross hatch checkered serration surfaces. Cylinder is 1.58 long by 1.72 diameter, holds 8 rounds of .38 Smith & Wesson Special or .357 Remington Magnum Ammunition interchangeably. This revolver comes furnished with its 3 original steel 8 round moon clips. Frame is Magnum, reinforced, N Frame with ball detent yoke and with beveled thumb latch. Ignition is flat faced hammer against floating firing pin. Trigger is .300 smooth faced combat with overtravel stud. Hammer us .415 contoured serrated spur. Safety system is internal transfer bar. This revolver does have the Smith & Wesson Internal Keyed Lock, positioned above the thumb latch. Grips are factory Rosewood laminate, square butt service size magnas with medallions, diamond pattern checkering, and with blued steel screw and brass escutcheons. Overall length is 9 inches; height is 5 1/2 inches; grip thickness is 1.21 inches at the butt. Finish is polished surface blued, with case colored hammer and trigger, and with semi gloss grip finish. Surface detractions on this 27-8 are negligible, only faint cylinder rotation marking where it was fired at the factory on March 28, 2007. We rate it as Mint in Box, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It was fired the usual 3 times at the factory, so cylinder face and chambers are Black on Three, as we've said for the past 60 years. It was never fired since it left the factory. This revolver comes in its original Performance Center Combination aluminum Case, complete with outer box. It includes a correct Mexico made Master Cable Lock, two Keys for its internal lock, and its three moon clips. It includes its original Nox protective paper, foam protective pad, case combination instructions, a never executed factory registration card, instruction manual, NRA enrollment card, color printoffs of Horton's Ads from October 4, 2007; and its unserialized, unassigned registration certificate signed by Mr. Michael L. Golden, President of Smith & Wesson, and by Mr. Lew Horton. Certificate is in a Performance Center Envelope with hard backing.
