HG5189 From BHV serial number prefix, this Smith & Wesson Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless, numbered model 686-3, was manufactured early in 1992. It is a thoroughly traditional basic revolver, satin stainless .375 semi-target hammer and serrated stainless .400 Combat Trigger. Frame is true square butt L Frame, grip frame serrated fore and aft. Product code is 104217, and that signals what is distinctive about this seldom seen variant of the 686. Barrel is 8 3/8 inch full lug stainless. Rear sight is high black blade adjustable, with Red Ramp front sight. Product code appears to be 104226, manufactured from 1987 until 1995 only. The period saw a limited but intense interest in silhouette match shooting, and Smith & Wesson manufactured this variant, not so much by wide popular demand as from which shooters demanded it. This one came from a home domicile here in West Tennessee. Rosewood grips are period correct Sile smooth target type with thumb rest and no speedloader cut. Weight is 51 ounces empty. Its surface detractions are minimal, only faint holster buffing on the muzzle area and light rotation marking to the cylinder. We rate it as Excellent, since no more than 10 percent of its finish is affected by our estimate; photos, at any rate, should suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. It is certainly excellent mechanically. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel’s forcing cone is minimal to moderate, a faint thin etchy shallow groove that traverses most of the width of the top strap. Bore, cylinder chambers and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels an exceptional 15 degrees after the cylinder times on all six positions in double action. On single action, the hammer travels an additional 35 degrees on all six, and the single action trigger pull is a crisp and original 3 1/2 pounds. Lateral play to the cylinder is negligible, about 1/2 mm, with the trigger relaxed and even less with the trigger fully depressed. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap measures a perfect .006. This is a distinctive and relatively rare 686-3. We’re offering it for only $ 579.95.
