Seller Description
This is the faintly modified descendant of the 1959 Smith & Wesson Bodyguard, the model 649-3, .357 Magnum Bodyguard Stainless, 5-shot stainless .357 Magnum with full lug 2 1/4 inch barrel. With considerable demand for pocket revolvers in the 1950s, Smith & Wesson introduced its Centennial Model in 1952, but there was still demand for a pocket compact revolver that a person could still fire in single action mode, like the Chief's Special, only without the hammer spur snagging a person's pocket or purse upon drawing the weapon. The upper part of the frame, as the photos show, shield the hammer; but still exposes its cleat-serrated hammer spur enough to produce a cocking motion for precise single action firing. The stainless .357 variant of the Bodyguard, the 649-3, was added as a regular part of the Smith & Wesson line in 1996, when Smith & Wesson beefed up the predecessor .38 Special 649-2 sufficiently for it to handle .357 Magnum ammunition. S&W continued production of another variant, the 649-4 in .38 Special only until 1998. This third engineering change variant of the 649 has a .312 MIM Metal-injected-Molded .312 smooth combat trigger and MIM flat-faced hammer with floating firing pin. All S&W Revolvers have an internal transfer bar safety that prevents accidental firing if a loaded weapon is dropped. In 2002, the 649-5 entered the market with Smith & Wesson's patented internal lock. So this variant, the 649-3 without internal lock, was produced from 1996 until 2002 only. Barrel length is 2 1/8 inches, and this 5 shot pocket revolver only weighs 20 ounces empty. Grips are Smith & Wesson's Uncle Mike's Combat Grips, softer rubber panels with finger grooves that give a surer grip for full house Magnum Loads Smith & Wesson Product Code is 103210. These revolvers have always been fairly scarce, hardly ever more so than nowadays; and this specimen is a locally owned revolver. From our knowledge of its owner, it has been fired no more than 100 rounds, all with .38 Special ammo. Its only surface detractions are very faint cylinder rotation marking. Bore, cylinder chambers, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Blast effect to the cylinder face and under side of the frame top strap only amounts to carbon, with no cutting whatsoever to the frame. It is in its original box with instruction manual. Replacement price on the current internal lock variant in our area, if a person can find one, is upwards of $800.00. We're offering the .357 Magnum Bodyguard Stainless model 649-3 in the photo for only $ 619.95
