Charter Arms debuted its Undercover series in 1964, and we began selling them shortly thereafter. It was always competitive with Smith & Wesson’s Chief’s Special Revolvers. Here is a relatively rare .32 S&W Long caliber specimen of the Undercover. It comes to us from a New England collection. Manufacturer was Charter Arms of Stratford, Conn., and so marked. From its 620000 range serial number, it was manufactured in 1981 or 1982. Type is traditional double and single action pocket revolver with transfer bar internal safety device. Construction is steel inner barrel, cylinder, yoke, pin, hammer, trigger, main frame and internal parts combined with an alloy barrel shroud and grip frame. Caliber is .32 Smith & Wesson and .32 S&W Long interchangeably, with a 6 shot swingout cylinder. Barrel is one piece 2 inch eight groove 1:16 rifling. Sights are welded base, serrated blade front, with frame integral fixed notch rear. Trigger is .300 serrated face, with matching short serrated spur hammer. Grip panels are American Walnut. Weight empty is 16 ounces, with center of gravity at the trigger. Finish is bright blue barrel, cylinder assembly, trigger, and main frame, with semi gloss anodized grip frame and case colored hammer. Surface detractions on this Undercover are only moderate, principally a small mar on the sight base and faint edge wear to the trigger guard. We rate this Charter as Very Good, close to Excellent, 85 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. Hammer travels an additional 5 degrees on all six positions on double action after the cylinder times. There is no lateral play to the cylinder with the trigger fully depressed. Double Action trigger pull is 8 pound vicinity, with a 4 pound original single action trigger pull. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel’s forcing cone is minimal, only a faint etchy streak with no depth. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap measures a tight .004. We estimate this revolver has been fired fewer than 50 times. Bore, cylinder chambers and mechanism are all bright and clean.
