Op-Ed: Outlaw Standard Bullets, Release 'Recalibrated' Rounds Forcing Citizens to Buy New Guns

Mr. Ron Berler, a published author, has an excellent, excellent solution to eliminate gun-related violence and mass murder: Outlaw standard bullets and create new, “recalibrated” rounds.

In a recent op-ed published by The Hartford Courant, Mr. Berler explained how his amazing program would work.

“Today, one can walk into a gun shop and purchase, for instance, a .22, .38, or .44-caliber handgun. Most firearms are built to accommodate one size round only,” explains Berler.

“So here’s what would happen if the manufacture of today’s standard-size rounds were outlawed, and .23, .39 and .46-caliber rounds took their place: Eventually, gun owners would run out of the old ammo, and their weapons would become paperweights,” says Berler.

Genius!  Why didn’t I think of that???

New firearms would have to be manufactured to fit the new ammo.  Most likely they’d be restricted to break-action and single-shot guns.  No more semi-auto handguns or long guns.  And, in order to purchase these guns, citizens would have to register them with the government.  It would be a “national gun policy do-over,” according to Berler.

Wait a minute… Registration. Massive limitations on civilian gun ownership. That sounds exactly like what they have down in Mexico.  And that works great!  Right?

Of course, law enforcement and the military would be able to keep the old ammo and guns.  Only law-abiding citizens would be forced into purchasing the new stuff.

Again, this is a brilliant idea.  Because the 2A was written to protect hunting rights, not to ensure the citizenry was capable of keeping government tyranny in check.

“A democracy sometimes requires that we sacrifice convenience for the public good. Passing through airport security is a hassle, but we accept it to help keep us safe. So would this proposal,” writes Berler.

“Law-abiding citizens could still own guns. And that is all the second amendment promises. It does not prohibit federal or state governments from regulating the type of weapon one may own,” he concludes.

Berler’s correct. Because that whole “Shall not be infringed” line of the 2A was a gaffe.

I was obviously joking.  This is the dumbest idea I’ve read in a long, long time.  It belongs in “The Onion.”

Mr. Berler.  It’s called reloading!  You should look into it.

And after you research reloading, examine the data on how criminals obtain their guns.  Turns out, only a small percentage (1.5 percent per one scholarly study) of them buy them from gun stores.  The vast majority of outlaws steal them, score them on the street, borrow them from a fellow gangster or use a straw purchaser.

Nothing you’ve proposed would shut down the black market nor prevent criminals from obtaining all the guns (new or old) and ammo that they wanted.  In essence, your idea is as stupid as it is ineffectual.

So, this man is stupid enough to be in big Govt., eh?
He must think we’re as stupid as he is.
    He’s definitely a Democrat.

Oh damn, that means I will not be able to walk into a store and buy a supply of .44/.357 Bain&Davis ammunition for one of weapons. Wait I have never been able to do this.

  • Patrick McWilliams November 15, 2019, 2:57 pm

So, a criminal couldn’t shoot someone with a .39 caliber? How many rounds does it take to pursue a career as a hold-up man or even a professional assassin? A lot of people who buy guns for self protection never fire them. A lot of hunters can bag 10 deer over 10 seasons with one 20-round box of ammo. I’ve seen a lot of stupid gun control proposals over the years, but this is about the dumbest yet.

As for the comparison often made between car registration and gun registration, I’ve seen car registration. That’s why I’m opposed to gun registration. Anyone who has gone through it will understand.

    One can not fix stupid!

  • RICK November 15, 2019, 9:55 am

How simple would it be to just re-barrel a weapon…..? Gun manufacturers do it all the time.

  • Ti November 15, 2019, 9:29 am

This is how it works. Op-Ed with firearms ignorant talking, fact checked by a bunch of like thinking ignorance.
Knowing just enough, to look absolutely fabulous to another that is about as dumb.

My opinion Hartford Courant is cat box liner.

I’m sure ALL the manufacturers would jump on this bandwagon 😉

  • Dennis John Mitchell November 15, 2019, 8:24 am

Back in the day someone in the somebody in Washington had the brilliant idea of putting serial numbers on ammo.

  • Robert Davis November 15, 2019, 7:54 am

I’ll never cease to be amazed how someone who actually believes their knowledge is superior on a subject on which they know nothing.

  • Randy Rowley November 15, 2019, 7:07 am

Again we see the arrogant leftist belief that law-abiding gun owners are the problem. It’s the equivalent of saying every woman will become a prostitute, it’s just a matter of time, and we must therefore register and limit them.

  • Jerry November 15, 2019, 6:30 am

Another asinine comment from someone who knows nothing about the subject he’s speaking about, but by god, he’s got the answer. The man’s an idiot.

Adam Schiff ( alias..”Fish Eyes” ) could not have done better. Great “Parody”. Come to think of it, a new 455 Casull would be nice. “Bo”

  • Will Drider November 14, 2019, 10:04 pm

In Berler’s pipe dream, he obviously doesn’t understand the “Liberator 45APC” Plan of Action either. However, I don’t believe the things would ever be allowed to get that lopsided in the first place.

  • Lewis Brande November 14, 2019, 1:41 pm

I would just get a new barrel.

  • Jim Harris November 14, 2019, 11:15 am

I guess this fool never heard of reloads or reforming cases – Duh -. The stupid get stupider with education .

    • Keith November 15, 2019, 6:22 am

Obviously, you didn’t read the entire article.

    • Warren Kelly November 15, 2019, 6:27 am

Perhaps you should have read the entire article. Duh.

Education? Or indoctrination that would make Khruschev (who, in the 1950’s laughed and said the communists would take over the US without firing a shot proud?
