An alleged carjacker was shot last week in San Antonio after the owner realized the suspect couldn’t drive stick.
The incident occurred around 2:45 a.m. when the car owner and their companion were leaving a local bar. According to Road & Track, two suspects approached them and, at gunpoint, demanded the keys and the vehicle.
The victims complied, handing over the keys.
A “Sticky” Situation
However, the situation took a surprising turn when one of the suspects tried to drive the car but realized it was a stick shift.
Failing to operate the standard transmission, the suspect exited the vehicle. He returned to his own car, where the other suspect was waiting.

Shortly after the suspect left the stolen car, a gun was fired.
“The owner of that car saw the two men running away,” KATV News reported, “and began shooting towards them, grazing one of them in the head.”
Carjacker Gets Caught
Next, police were called to a home shortly after the shooting and found a wounded young man. He was rushed to a local hospital.
After officers coordinated information, it was discovered that the young man and the carjacker were the same man. He was then arrested for aggravated robbery.

In the 911 call, the young man “claimed to have been in an accident in the downtown area,” said Road & Track.
A YouTube video from KSAT 12 shows the officers on the scene of the stick shift carjacking. Little more information is known.

Stick Shift Cars
While carjacking is common, the chances of a robber finding a car they don’t know how to drive are growing slimmer.
“Just 18 percent of American drivers can drive a stick,” noted a recent article from The New York Times. Only approximately one percent of cars manufactured each year are manuals.
This carjacking was on the bizarre side, but it wasn’t successful. It’s starting to look like there are two things to invest in if you don’t want your car to be stolen. A stick shift and a personal defense firearm.

Millennial theft device, manual transmission, lol.
Glad one of the perps was apprehended, and nobody died. Shooting at someone who is running away in the dark of night is stupid and irresponsible. I will not be surprised if the shooter is eventually arrested.
What a shame ‘little-Johnny’ wasn’t removed from the gene pool. He’s probably already back out on the streets.
Like Bob W., I drive a stick shift and carry, though I would not open myself up to prosecution by firing at a fleeing perp. Better to shoot through the window and hit them in the driver’s seat before they had the chance to run you over. And my children were forced to learn how to drive with a manual transmission and knew from an early age that they would not get their license until they could competently drive a stick shift.
I love this. It’s freaking hilarious. I drive stick and have a gun so I guess I’m ok.😂😂😂
