This shotgun was Not designed for steel shot; if anyone uses steel shot in it, a cracked barrel will most likely result. The last time any of our locals did that, against our advice, the crack began where the choke started, about 2 inches back of the muzzle. Spanish Date Code marking is simply the letter X, but we estimate an X1 to be correct. This shotgun was most likely manufactured in 1978. X indicates 1952, and we do not believe that Kassnar Imports was hatched yet in 1952. Besides, we sold several of these back in their day, the 1970s. This is a massive yet graceful 10 gauge, 3 1/2 inch Magnum, side by side or double barrel. Manufacturer is Hermana Zabala, the Zabala Brothers, fine gun makers from Eibar, Spain. Importer was Kassnar of Harrisburg Pennsylvania, later known as KBI and as Charles Daly. We tentatively identify this Zabala Kassnar as a Model 213, but that is subject to correction. Construction is entirely blue steel metal, with 1/3 coverage engraving on the receiver sides and edges. Type is box lock side by side, double trigger, with internal hammers that cock from the breech action. The barrels have an extractor, no auto ejector. Buttstock and Forend are Glossy Finished Spanish Walnut with cut checkering on the forend and pistol grip sides. Barrels are 32 inch .734 Improved Modified Right Tube and .730 muzzle diameter Full Choke Left Tube. Length of pull from the face of the right tube / front trigger to the end of the professionally installed Pachmayr Decelerator Pad is the correct 14 inches. Overall length is 48 3/4 inches with 1 1/2 inch drop at the comb and 2 1/2 inches drop at the end of the buttpad, also correct. Stock is in line with the field of sight on both beads, so with the top tang safety, this shotgun will be Southpaw Friendly, no cant in either direction. Weight empty is a hefty 10 1/2 pounds, with its center of gravity at the back end of the forend’s beavertail section. Chambering is for 10 gauge Lead Shot Shells only, No Steel Shot, 2 7/8 inch or 3 1/2 inch interchangeably. Surface detractions on this double are moderate, with brown toning mixed with white on the forward section of its barrels, and with occasional freckling to its metal finish elsewhere. Wood shows occasional small light scours, few of which penetrate the finish. We rate it as Very Good, 80 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically; lockup and breech motion are good and tight; and bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Ten gauge doubles are simply no longer on the market.
