LG2346 Shortly after Winchester discontinued its well-respected, but too-expensive-to-produce model 37 in 1963, Cooey of Canada went into gear and manufactured a good many lower end Winchester shotguns and rifles in the 1960s and 1970s. Here is one of those Winchesters, a Model 370 chambered in 12 gauge, capable of handling any shell from 2 3/4 inch all the way to 3 inch magnums. On the magnums, that’ll be, If the operator can stand it. This specimen comes to us from a Shelby County Tennessee Estate. The muzzle diameter is .702, probably open enough to handle steel, but we don’t recommend that at all. Length of pull on the buttstock is 14 inches from the face of the blue steel trigger to the end of the original factory serrated surface buttplate. Weight empty is 6 pounds 3 ounces, with center of gravity about an inch forward of the receiver. Buttstock is has about 1 inch of right hand cant, not too unfriendly for a Southpaw. Note that the forend shows a small crack on its upper left rear side next to the black polymer spacer. Separation is minimal. Apart from that, surface detractions are moderate, with quite a bit of freckling on the receiver, some of it etchy on the left side. It has moderate scouring and weathering on the reddish tint stained forend and buttstock. Barrel bluing is strong throughout, but with considerable freckling. Breech lever are trigger guard are dull with gray tint, down from their original black. We rate this 37A as Very Good, 75 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. This shotgun is eminently collectable. From its C224000 range serial number, and from similarly numbered new 370s we received during 1970 and 1971, we date it to one of those years.
