Seller Description
W. Leech and Sons 20 Bore BOXLOCK, EXTRACTOR, ENGLISH GRIP, 5LBS. 7OZ.
When looking for a fine little bird gun to walk over hill and dale in pursuit of your favorite upland quarry, there is nothing nicer than carrying a light weight, perfectly balanced little English 20 bore. There are many out there and some remain in quite nice condition, and this is one of them, affordably priced and ready for your next hunt or round at the sporting clays course. W. Leech and Sons was a very respected maker with their facilities in Essex England and they produced this fine shotgun in 1927 on the simple and reliable Ansley Deeley boxlock action. Balanced 3/8” ahead of the hinge pin and less than 5 1/2lbs., this is the grouse and quail hunters dream gun. I have found that these sound, attractive little English doubles are actually a better buy than the American guns, and as much as I hate to admit it, nicer in hand to boot.
The 28” barrels have excellent bores, choked CYL/F (.000/.025, can be altered to your specs for $65), internal bore diameter of .619/.616, minimum barrel wall thickness of 30 thou right, 33 thou left, 99% blue, 2 ½” chambers, ribs are tight, no dents or dings, barrels in proof, tight on breech face and hinge pin like a new gun, all in excellent condition.
The tiny action has no case color, some nice border and scroll engraving, decent screws, action tight with lever centered, excellent double triggers, trigger guard plum colored, extractors, all in excellent mechanical condition.
The nicely figured English walnut has excellent finish and checkering, English style grip with splinter forearm, no splits, cracks, or repairs, excellent wood to metal fit, 14 1/8” LOP to butt plate, 2 ¼” drop at heel, 1 5/8” drop at comb, 3/16” cast off (dimensions can be altered to your specs within 10 days of purchase), silver stock shield with the initials “P. F.”, can be changed to yours by my stocker if you so choose.
I have been chasing American vintage double shotguns for years, and have recently discovered the affordability and delightful handling characteristics of these little British boxlocks. I am not sure you would call many of them “investment quality” firearms, as they were prolific in their manufacture and are readily available. Simply put, if you find one in excellent condition like this one, it is hard to beat the value you get with superb handling characteristics, excellent mechanics, and reasonable price tag.
There are more photos upon request. There is a 30 day mechanical warranty on this gun. Please see my other fine VINTAGE FIREARMS on this website. Just click on the line in the ad that says “see all items from this seller” and a nice list of collectible and sporting arms will appear. I have another 200 or so not yet listed, so if you don’t see what you seek, just ask. Hope to see you at the Great Northeastern Side by Side Classic June 3-5 in northeastern Pennsylvania. We will be there with over 100 fine shotguns for your pleasure. Thanks for looking!
