General Specs: J. Stevens Arms, Year 1943, 12 Gauge, 7lb 8oz, LOP 14 1/16"
Serial Number: 61445
For the connoisseurs of all things trench related, Vintage Firearms is pleased to present this high condition all factory original with historical stamps and rollmarks - The Stevens Model 520-30 Trench gun.
The Stevens Model 520 was a pump-action shotgun developed by John Browning and originally manufactured by the J Stevens Arms & Tool Company between 1909 and 1916. Stevens was sold to Savage Arms in 1920 with the manufacture of firearms resuming under Savage ownership. Model 520 production continued until 1939 when it was replaced by the Model 520A. The military designation for the Model 520 shotgun is Mod 520-30 and like its civilian version is a hammerless, pump action, take-down design with a tubular magazine that holds 5 shells. Being a bona fide trench gun it would not be complete unless it has a bayonet mount and slam fire capability and this gun delivers. With no trigger disconnector, the user can hold the trigger down while cycling the shotgun and once the action is returned to battery the shotgun fires allowing what is termed 'slam fire' and is part of the folklore that surrounds a Trench gun.
This example is all correct, its serial number places it manufacture in 1943, just a couple of thousand units before the bayonet lug was to be stamped with the letter 'S'. Beginning in December 1943 letters were added to the bayonet adaptors to help armorers differentiate between the various trench gun manufactures as each had their own barrel wall specifications with Winchester Model 1897 trench guns stamped 'W' and Ithaca's an 'I'. The unusual plum toned anodized bayonet lug and blued ventilated metal handguard are hallmarks of the WWII M520-30 and is attached with three screws each having it own traverse barrel groove. The gun's serial number is stamped on the lower tang and the barrel extension, flaming bomb marks are evident and all roll marks are present and correct. Incredibly this shotgun has avoided the arsenal overhaul that was common to many trench and riot guns and has survived in its original factory form without any new cartouches or reproofing marks. Internally the gun exhibits a mirrored cylinder bore and a combat trigger breaking at 3.2lb with a slick action making this pump quick to handle. This gun has been well cared for its entire life and is noticeable in its overall condition showing a light amount of edge wear to the factory bluing with all screws in excellent shape; the photographs tell the whole story. Total wartime production of the Stevens Model 520-30 amounted to 33,306 and of those only a limited number held their original finish and so are notable when found in such unadulterated condition.
From the unmarked Stevens buttplate to the plum colored bayonet boss and everything in between, this gun is just as righteous as can be.
