Here is the immediate ancestor to the venerable Remington Model 1100. This is a specimen of the Model 878, one we never saw that many of to begin with. Thanks to Remington’s historians, this is an A Grade, ADX variant Field Shotgun. From its C F barrel code, this 878 was manufactured in April 1959, very early First Year of Production specimen with 19000 range serial number. The success of the 1100 ended production on the 878 by 1963. Type is gas operated semi-auto; and Mr. L.R. Crittendon and his team took an 870 barrel and fitted it with twin gas ports, to work the action. Remington named it the 878 Automaster. This is the first 878 we’ve had in almost 40 years. It comes to us from one of our dealer friends in Illinois. Surface detractions are only moderate, principally a scratch on the rear left side of the receiver that dug into the adjoining portion of the buttstock. Plain uncheckered glossy finish walnut buttstock and forend bear a moderate amount of scouring otherwise, but the metal retains unusually strong bluing for a shotgun this age. We rate it as Very Good, 80 percent vicinity overall, and the metal better than that. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Notice the very faint shell contact streaking on the chrome plated floorplate or shell carrier. This shotgun simply has not seen much use. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. We doubt it was fired more than 200 times. Barrel is 28 inch full choke, .693 diameter at the muzzle, and chambering is for 2 3/4 inch shells only. Length of pull is a very adult 14 5/8 inches from the trigger face to the end of the period correct No-Shoc dark red rubber recoil pad. Note that the pad is thinner on the sides that the buttstock, and the comb side exceeds the height of the stock by about 1/4 inch.
