This descendant of the US 1903 Rifle outlasted, and outshot, the Vietnam Era Winchester Model 70s. Its most prized form civilian is the 700P, but this SPS-V, Special Purpose Synthetic Varmint configuration, can be readily glass bedded and adjusted for even greater accuracy if need be. 90 percent of the time, need not be. Manufacturer is Remington Arms. Construction is all steel barrel and action, with alloy trigger group and synthetic stock. Finish is Remington Special Purpose matte black metal throughout, including the bolt body. Stock is DuPont synthetic with pliable gray rubber inserts for enhanced holding qualities. Forend area is vented beavertail for enhanced heat dissipation and improved accuracy. Type is Mauser descendant Bolt Action 4+1 internal magazine with BDL type floorplate. Barrel is 26 inch Heavy Barrel with 1:12 rate of twist. Trigger is .325 smooth faced white rib reinforced steel, present on 3 1/2 pounds but externally adjustable up to 2 pounds in either direction, single stage. Safety is two position receiver mounted. Length of pull is 13 1/4 inches from the trigger face to the end of the 3/4 inch Rem-cell Recoil pad. 46 1/2 inches overall length; 8 1/2 pounds weight empty and unscoped, with center of gravity under the chamber. Caliber, of course, is .308 Winchester / 7.62x51 NATO. Receiver is drilled and tapped to accept Weaver 35 and 36 bases, or Redfield SR type; or best of all, one piece Redfield JR type steel, old Redfield number 700RHSA. Leupold bases number 50005 or 50006 will work admirably, and a one piece base helps strengthen and stabilize the rifle’s action. Photos show one of our stock specimens.
