This 1858 Remington replica is a high-quality production from Pietta of Italy, faithful in all respects and legal for period-strict Civil War reenactors. In fact, one of our local SCV operatives who has shifted from making war to making love has sold us several items from his equipment, and pursues gallantry in other ways. Never mind him; in a few years he’ll be preoccupied with food like the rest of us when we have spent our midlife crisis energies. This revolver’s cylinder chambers and nipples are excellent. Its main detractions come from the cylinder rod, which is admittedly a bit sticky to remove, and has some galling and hammer indications on its front end and adjacent areas on the lower barrel flats about midway down the barrel. The brass is a nice aged patina colour, but will buff or polish to suit its new owner. Cylinder timing is excellent, and blacking to the forcing cone area of the barrel rear and topstrap are moderate. In the bore, the rifling lands are strong, but there appears to be about 30 percent light pitting from 7 o’clock to about 10 o’clock when viewing into the muzzle.
