Model 98 BNZ 8mm Sporter Steyr-Daimler

Classic Mauser 98 made by Steyr-Daimler, Austria. Minimalist sporterization to produce a lighter, faster handling hunting rifle with quicker target acquisition. Barrel is the original 23" with stepped profile & Steyr proofmarks. Front sight assy replaced with better quality ramp with stippled top surface and Marbles Sheard blade with brass bead. Rear military sight assy replaced with semi-buckhorn type open sights. Low profile Williams rear peep sight assembly rides over rear reciever bridge in a ' Ghost-ring' configuration. The tough wartime laminated stock was retained, but reprofiled. The forend was shortened, narrowed, and given a schnabel. The rear was narrowed from the pistol grip back. Takedown disc was removed, and along with the sling slot, filled. With these measures, an empty weight of 7.5 Lbs was achieved. Given the power inherent in the 8mm Mauser round, the addition of a recoil pad was doubtless appreciated by all who fired it. All in all, the result makes for a fine handling brush gun, truck / SUV rack rifle, or hunting camp spare. In keeping with its military origin, it's a tough, proven arm that can stand up to the elements and does not need to coddled. Alternatively, it could make a good restoration project for the collector wanting to add a desirable bnz-coded 98 to their stable. Please email with questions.
