John Dickson and Sons Round Body 12ga. – RARE GAME SCENE ENGRAVED John Dickson’s brilliant round bodied, self-opening action is one of the most sought after designs in vintage shotguns. The diminutive action houses the firing mechanism, the ejector mechanism, and triple locking mechanisms, creating fine crisp trigger pulls, and positive and reliable ejection of spent shells. The shape of the action gives this 12 bore shotgun the feel of a little 20 bore, and at 6lbs. 2oz. and perfect balance (3/8” ahead of the hinge pin) and handling dynamics, it shoulders like a small bore as well. This is NOT a limited use, 2” chambered, fly weight 12 bore, but rather a robust 2 ½” chambered gun nitro proofed for 1 1/8 oz. loads that can be used for your upland shooting and clays games. Most interesting is the gun was originally owned by Alistair Sinclair, the deceased managing director of Dickson’s, and one of very few ever produced with fine game scene engraving. Produced in 1927, serial number 7110 is in absolutely outstanding condition. The chopper lump barrels are factory replacements, with 98% barrel blue, excellent bores, 27” long with tight ribs, ring like chimes, choked SK/IC (.005/.010), interior bore diameter .726/.727, minimum barrel wall thickness 35 thousandths right barrel, 33 thousandths left, light handling marks, no dents, barrels tight on breech face and hinge pin like a new gun, crisp lettering and markings, just an excellent set of barrels. The action is delightfully engraved with fine foliate scroll, bouquets galore, and game birds finely engraved on both sides and the bottom of the action. The beaded fences are gracefully shaped and sculpted, blending seamlessly into the most ornate top strap I have witnessed. The receiver has a coin finish which really highlights the engraving, very crisp double triggers, niter blued trigger guard and screws, strong well timed ejectors, great screws, all in excellent working order. The fully figured walnut stocks adorn the gun with dark, smoky marble cake figure, excellent checkering, plenty of light handling marks, full oil finish, excellent wood to metal fit, no cracks or repairs, 14 ¾” LOP to checkered wood butt, 14 1/8” LOP to the end of the actual butt stock, 2 3/8” drop at heel, 1 5/8” drop at comb, 1/8” cast off (stock dimensions can be altered to your specs within 10 days of purchase for a small added cost), no issues at all. There are few Dickson Round Body self opening shotguns ever offered for sale. To find such a nice example in fine condition housed in a vintage leather trunk case fitted to the gun is a true treasure. These vintage shotguns are in high demand by discriminating collectors and shooters and for good reason. They are one of the finest shooting shotguns on the planet.
