Hall North Model 1843 Side Lever Breech Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine Made by Simeon North Middletown Ct 1844-1853, approx. 10,000 made. 52 cal smoothbore, Mech near Exc works well, has an excellent nipple . Original wood near Exc with some initials on left side of the stock and a cartouche. Has a 21” Rd barrel with original ramrod and 2 barrel bands and the saddle ring and bar on the left side. Has a JH sub inspector marking at the breech near rear sight. Has some pitting and wear in the top of the bolt, and hammer area so there is no makers markings visible. Metal overall has a dark brown patina finish overall. Among the oufits issued these carbines were the 1st and 2nd US Dragoons during their Mexican War service. Many union Cavalry regiments were armed with these M 1843’s throughout the civil war. Quite a few outfits in Illinois, Missiouri and Kansas were so equipped , while others such as the 4th Arkansas , 5th Iowa , 8th and 9th NY, 2nd Wisconsin and 1st Indiana are also known to have been issued them
