From a New England collection comes this attractive Lee Enfield British Military Service Rifle, No. 5 Mark 1, Jungle Carbine. Production date was 1946, and so marked. Manufacturer was the Royal Ordnance Factory, Enfield, London. The Jungle Carbines were manufactured only from 1944 until 1947. Construction is entirely steel metal, with two piece walnut stock and rubber buttpad center. Chambering is .303 British caliber, 7.7 x 56mm. Barrel is 18 inch factory cut and crowned, five groove 1:10 right hand rifling. Permanent front sight / muzzle funnel / bayonet lug assembly brings the barrel’s overall length out to 20 1/2 inches. Sight system is wing protected blade front with flip up dual aperture rear, with calibrations of 800 yards. Firing mechanism is Enfield pull cocker type, with left side serrated safety lever. Magazine is 10 round factory issue, 10+1 rounds fully loaded capacity. Stock has correct cartouches underneath the tang area, and markings are correct on the left side receiver and receiver band, and atop the chamber. This rifle underwent at least one arsenal refinish during its career; metal has an enamel coating at places, with brown toning at places. Barrel junction with the forend, front barrel band, and barrel guard flange have moderate amounts of light pitting. Bore, mechanism, and chamber are all bright and clean, with no pitting or residue whatsoever in the barrel. We rate this rifle as Good, Arsenal Refinish, 70 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves.
