Up for auction is a great little concealed carry S&W 9mm auto police trade-in. The model 669 was one of the first stainless steel (stainless steel slide over an aluminum frame), all metal, concealed carry (police "detective" style) autos that Smith and Wesson produced in the mid 80's (specifically between 1985 and 1988, according to my sources). It is a bobbed hammer, double action pistol with an ambidextrous safety-decocker. It is a light (2 pounds, give or take), compact (2 inch barrel), rugged, and reliable 9mm pistol with a double-stack, 12-round magazine. It has a simple and quick take-down style of disassembly, similar to the Browning 1911, with a push through slide-stop/take-down lever. This one comes with a 12-round magazine with a "pinky" rest, but 15-round magazines are available for it if you need higher capacity. It features an ambidextrous safety lever (both sides) and black wrap-around grips with good, "grippy" texturing. Front and back strap checkering--along with additional checkering on the trigger guard--give it a solid feel in the hand. This pistol has been fired very little, as can be seen from the wear on the barrel, slide. In fact, it doesn't even show holster wear around the muzzle as is so typical of police concealed carry pistols. It looks and shoots like a brand new pistol. For those of us who like--and trust-- the old-school feel of an all metal pistol, this would make an ideal carry piece. The heft in your hand promotes a feeling of never-fail reliability--you know this pistol won't let you down when your back is against the wall. And the slight additional weight, in fact, helps to hold down the recoil of 9mm. All in all, this pistol felt to me like it was stepping off the page of a vintage gun catalog from a by-gone era when guns (and men to match them) were made of steel.
