This is an original World War II contract Winchester Model 1897 Trench Shotgun (serial number E886704) that was manufactured in 1940/41. These were heavily used in the early days of WWII especially by the USMC during jungle fighting where they proved to be an excellent close combat weapon. The left side of the receiver is stamped with “U.S./Ordnance Bomb” proof with circled “WP” proof on top front edge. The barrel has the standard two-line Winchester factory markings on the left side followed by “2 ¾ chamber/CYL” and also has the correct “US Ordnance bomb” proof along with the Winchester circled “WP” proof. The barrel is fitted with the correct late pattern 4-row metal heat shield/handguard that has the bayonet adapter/ lug. It is fitted with an 18 groove round walnut pump handle and low comb walnut pistol grip stock. The left side is stamped with a boxed “WB” and Ordnance Cannon cartouche. The very bottom of the stock has a modified replacement black metal checkered butt plate. Length of pull is 13 inches.
Very fine condition with 95% of the original blue finish overall with edge and high spot wear and slight finish loss on the magazine tube and slide portion of the pump handle. The stock and pump handle both show light handling marks and scratches with a clear cartouche. The firearm has an excellent action. A very nice WWII Winchester Model 1897 Trench Shotgun.
