Here is an eminently serviceable, still attractive Leupold M8 2x / two power magnification, E.E.R. / Extended Eye Relief pistol scope that comes to us from its original home in Pennsylvania. From its J prefix serial number, it was manufactured in 1968. Its firearm home was a late 1960s, S-Prefix, 6 inch Smith & Wesson model 28-2. The Model 28s, of course, were chambered in .357 Magnum, so this scope has not been exposed to .44 Magnum recoil. Its principal surface detractions, the ring marks, are there because it was mounted with a set of Buehler Handgun mounts; and the Buehler Rings, top quality though they are, are more difficult to work with than conventional steel Leupolds or Redfields due to their vertical split, so the installation and readjustment resulted in some tube abrasions. Finishwise, we rate this scope as Very Good, on account of the ring scratches. Note that it has no other edge wear, and lenses show no abrasions or wear whatsoever, as the photos show. Crosshair is Duplex; magnification is 2 power; tube diameter is 1 inch; 20mm objective lens and 32mm eyepiece; overall length 7 7/8 inches; aluminum alloy construction; 21.7 feet field of view at 100 yards. This is the direct ancestor to Leupold’s current production FX-2, 2x20 Handgun Scope SKU 58720. Replacement pricing on the current model is upwards of $400.
