Savage Arms bought the A.H. Fox Gun Co. in late 1929 and continued to build Ansley Fox’s gun through about 1942, and shipped a few after the war and then mothballed the gun forever. Savage owned the name “FOX”, so about 1946 Savage came out with the Fox Model B, a side x side that was far more affordable than the original Fox design, a gun that could be produced with less hand fitting and still be an attractive gun. There were several variations and changes along the way; the earliest guns built in the mid-1940’s were case colored with an etched game scene on the bottom of the action that is referred to by collectors as the “Ducks Over the Marsh” scene. Later the etched scene was eliminated and the case-colored frame was adorned with a simple fox head line engraved on the bottom of the action, and the latest iteration had the action black oxide coated with the same fox head stamping on the bottom of the action. They did have different models with various extra features. The base model had the solid rib, double triggers, extractors, and bullnose splinter forend. Other models had single non-selective triggers, some had ejectors or ventilated ribs, beavertail forends, and some came with a combination of these “extras”. This Fox Model B “H Series”, snD553304 made in 1968 is an amazing find in the most desirable .410 chambering, as it appears new and unfired, with no primer marks around the firing pin holes, no wear from use anywhere on the gun. The gun basically shows 99.5% of the factory finishes on all metal and wood, perfect hand-cut checkering, mirror bores, not a notable mark on the gun. The only reason it is not 100% is a few tiny handling marks in the wood. The barrels are tight on the hinge pin and the breech face, the mechanics are superb, and the 3” chambers will handle game or targets. Finding an American made vintage side x side in .410 bore that is like new is a rare find. You just don’t get the opportunity as most were used and dinged up, stocks cut, etc. We have priced this gun to sell, so don’t hesitate or the opportunity will vanish.
