Answer: Mauser designed Bolo very early, circa 1902, so called "prewar Bolo" in collector community. The purpose of a small grip gun is unclear, probably targeting on Asian market where potential buyers had smaller hands than Europeans. Very few prewar Bolo were made. In Weimar Era, Bolo became popular. Most were sold to Asia and finished their usable life there over many years. This particular Weimar Era made Bolo, with small Mauser banner on the left side panel, was called by Mauser's official distributer as "1922 Police Model", or "Late Postwar Bolo" among collectors. The exotic name "Bolo" is believed associating with Russian Bolshevik. During Allied Intervention, American soldiers called Bolshevik "Bolo". Most likely the "Bolo" name originated from Early Postwar Bolo (same as this one but without Mauser banner on the left side), and later the name propagated to Late Postwar Bolo and even to Prewar Bolo. These small grip variations are very similar in appearance, all of them are called Bolo nowadays, even though Prewar Bolo had nothing to do with Bolshevik. Some Bolos were also sold to the U.S and Latin America. The condition of this gun indicates that it was probably sold as a commercial gun in 1920s.
