Description: Wow, just imagine if this fine antique could talk…what stories it might tell! Here’s one of the most popular pistols carried by soldiers of both sides during the War Between the States. According to Colt and from the serial number, this was made in 1862.

This Model 1849 31 caliber Colt, all serial numbers matching, except for the wedge is in great mechanical condition. The revolver is tight and the cylinder locks up and lines up correctly. I have personally fired this pistol and it fired very nice. Only loaded the one chamber with the decent nipple on it. The other nipples are rough and solid in the cylinder. The cylinder has COLTS PATENT and the serial number written on it, and there is some of the stagecoach scene still present. This is the rarer six shot cylinder configuration with the 5" barrel.

The rifling in the octagon barrel is good and has the expected age pitting in the grooves. The front bead sight is present and made of brass. Loading lever under the barrel operates correctly and latches firmly. The writing on the barrel’s top has been defaced and appears to have been done on purpose. I have a theory as to why. It should say ADDRESS SAMUEL COLT – HARTFORD CONN and you can see traces of that, but it looks like it was “banged on” or “beat on” until it was nearly obliterated. Purely speculation of course, but if a southern soldier were to come into possession of this pistol, say as a battlefield pick-up, it is conceivable that he may not wish to have a “Yankee name or address” on his personal sidearm and thus would have made an attempt to get rid of what he would have considered offensive writing. This is of course purely speculation on my part…certainly it tantalizes the imagination that this could be the case with this particular firearm. Barrel also shows signs of exterior pitting perhaps from storage in a damp or wet area, or the results of field use.

The frame/receiver is in very good shape with COLTS PATENT on the left side and there is the letter ”G” in the brass behind the trigger area which I'm guessing could be an inspector’s stamp. The trigger guard and back strap are brass with traces of silvering still existing on them.

The walnut grips are in decent condition, not split or broken. There are multiple digs and dangs on the butt stock, one little piece missing on the left side (see the photos) and it’s obvious it was used as a hammer when needed by the soldier or owner.

The asking price reflects the overall condition including the age patina, however what the asking price does not convey is the feeling of history held in one’s hand. This was actually carried and used, perhaps fired in anger during the conflict. It was a true working tool and as such was treated as a tool. Be sure to look at the photos closely they are true and accurate.

If you’re looking for a real Civil War piece that displays very nice, exhibits the signs of actual use perhaps in many battles during the War Between the States, and gives you a feeling of history held in the hand, then this is the one for you.

Reasonable offers will be considered.
