Many think that the MK IV Gold Cup National Match guns, built between 1983 and 1996, are among the best "Government Models" Colt ever made. The 1911 Government Model served as the US Military's sidearm through most of the 20th century. It remains in widespread use with LE and special ops groups, and still dominates big bore pistol matches. Many today still regard the 1911-style semi auto as the ultimate pistol design. The Gold Cup National Match (GCNM) edition was Colt's high-end, factory-tuned and accurized target pistol in the years around 1990 when Colt quality was still at its peak. GCNM models are still prized for their match grade components, close tolerances, hand fitting, target sights, crisp and light triggers, and resulting accuracy. The relatively uncommon “Ultimate Bright Stainless” high-polish variant is perhaps the best looking gun in the line.

This specimen is a full size Government Model target 1911A1. The serial number (SN 24xxxE) and “enhanced” styling, including undercut trigger guard and up-turned grip safety, point to a build late in this model's 1986-96 production run. Features include a Commander-type hammer, over-travel adjustable grooved trigger, flat mainspring housing, flared ejection port, and standard recoil rod/barrel bushing design. The finish on all outer surfaces and controls is mirror-like high-polish bright stainless except for the top barrel contour's frosted texture and fine ribbing. The barrel is medium-polish stainless and the recoil rod is blued. The Colt factory took great care hand fitting the barrel, bushing and slide on GCNM models, and the lock up and feel of the action on this pistol shows it. This gun is tight and smooth! Sights are black, consisting of a fully adjustable Elliason rear and bold blade front, proportioned to the rear notch for a precise sight picture. The grip is an original Colt wrap-around, checkered, black rubber unit. The two stainless (7-rd & 8-rd), single stack magazines each have steel followers and steel floor plates bearing the Colt trademark. The tan, synthetic-suede, Kolpin soft case consists of ½ inch of reinforced nylon padded foam with zipper closure.

This gun clean, well lubed, and in NRA (Modern) Excellent condition. The bore is in bright 100% condition. Although shot, it has not been shot much. The clean breach face and lack of burnishing at the barrel-bushing bearing points support the low-use claim. Lock up is extremely tight with little sideways play at the bushing either with the slide open or in battery. There is also little side-to-side or up-down play in the slide on its rails. Metal finish condition of the flats and contours of the slide and frame is about 99% with a few light handling marks, probably from resting on a table. Most mars take the form of very light scuffs near the upper edge of the slide flats, particularly around the ejection port. A very thin scratch also occurs on the left-rear slide flat under the rear sight. The frosted matte contours of the upper barrel also show some light scuffing, as does the left side of the barrel. The major finish issue is where the frame has an unfortunate but all too common reassembly “oops” under the slide catch. A pair of thin scratches caused by the back hook of the slide catch wanders from the root of the trigger up to the rear of the catch. The wrap around grips are essentially 100%, as is the soft case. Condition of the mags matches that of the gun. This gun has been shot little and lovingly cared for.
