Description: On consignment we have a Colt Model of 1911 US Military pistol in .45 ACP. This pistol features a Colt 1911 frame, marked UNITED STATE PROPERTY, serial number 132530, with parkerized finish and checkered brown plastic grips, military grip and thumb safety, a parkerized slide with 5" barrel and fixed sights, and comes with one Colt magazine. Additional information and research letter provided by consignor.

Information provided by Springfield Research Service results in a direct hit in a known document in the National Archives indicating that Colt M1911 S/N 132530 was originally manufactured as a "RECEIVER ONLY". In addition, Mr. Charles Clawson references this serial number in several of his books on the 1911/1911A1 documenting its production history. Page 382 of “Colt .45 Service Pistols” states M1911 serial range 12586 were assigned to Springfield Armory. He later states in his 3rd Edition “Collector's Guide to Colt .45 Service Pistols”, pages 23-24, that S/Ns 127979 to 133186 were suspended and not produced at Springfield Armory. The section of this book focuses on the “unsolved mysteries" associated with the Springfield Armory suspended serial numbers. On page 24, he reports a note being posted in the Colt production ledger on or about June 29, 1916, directly after serial number 129616 that reads "Notice - 45 Auto Gov from 129617 to 133186 inclusive were made in Gov Armory, Springfield, Mass." Mr. Clawson states: "This statement proved to be incorrect, as these pistols were subsequently manufactured by Colt." He provides some information about this serial range, and then indicates further details are not known.

The "AA" marking was struck through the finish on the left side of the receiver at Augusta Arsenal to indicate an Ordnance final inspection mark for pieces assembled and inspected there accordingly. The estimated assembly date is based on the components used during its assembly. Colt M1911 S/N 132530 was assembled with one World War II production Keyes Fibre stock, one Korean War vintage Nor Loc stock, a World War II Hi Std. barrel that has been arsenal refinished, and a World War II Colt wide spur hammer and milled trigger. Therefore, it is concluded the pistol completed assembly and final inspection around the Korean War timeframe. The matching arsenal-applied finish on the receiver and slide is typical of that used by Augusta Arsenal in the early 1950's based on other pistols assembled during that time frame. The magazine has a base that is marked "COLT" (over) "45 AUTO." and is most likely a WWII production commercial/military transfer. The magazine has been refinished and is Parkerized.

Colt M1911 S/N 132530 appears to be unaltered as produced and assembled by Augusta Arsenal. The pistol displays that it was lightly handled and used after being assembled and inspected. All corresponding wear patterns on the barrel, slide and frame match. The bore of the Hi Std. barrel is excellent and bright. The wear patterns at the butt end of the mainspring housing and receiver match. The slight wear pattern on the bottom of the hammer matches the pattern on top of the grip safety tang that corresponds with the hammer. The trigger, slide stop and thumb safety all show a consistent amount of light wear. Any Colt "RECEIVER ONLY" example in the Springfield Armory suspended serial range is extremely rare and represents less than 1% of total M1911 production.
