Up for auction is a beautifully restored 1944 Finnish M-39. The M-39 is, by and large, accepted as the final and best evolution of the Russian Mosin-Nagant. Although poor and small, the Finns were a proud and independent race. Economics forced them to fall back on large quantities of captured Russian Mosins, they nevertheless insisted that their citizen soldiers be equipped with a first-rate rifle. After many iterations and changes, they came up with this model, the M-39, just in time for Winter War in '39 and the subsequent Continuation War in '41. A number of changes were made to the original Mosin design to improve its performance: the Finns shorted and thickened the barrel for greater accuracy; the stock added a semi pistol grip; the sights were improved and modernized, and the trigger assembly was upgraded (this one has a beautiful trigger; the best I've ever felt in a Mosin). All in all, the last version of the Mosin, this version, is, by all accounts, a superb military bolt action rifle. And as proof of that, the greatest sniper who ever lived was a Finn using a Finnish Mosin: he accounted for over 500 confirmed kills in less than 9 months. That should be sufficient testimonial to the quality of Finnish weapons. ( is an arsenal repair to the butt was a common wartime fix to keep service weapons in the field.)
