Over the weekend a group of around 100 teens convened in our nation\u2019s capital to ratify a Students\u2019 Bill of Rights for School Safety<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The resulting 15-point plan contains a laundry list of mandates, everything from ensuring access to safe spaces to \u201crecognizing systemic and institutional oppressions\u201d to regulating modern sporting rifles under the National Firearms Act.<\/p>\n

Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg funded the three-day summit, which was held at Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

Among the attendees was Parkland survivor Jack McLeod. He spoke with The74Million.org<\/a> about the need \u201cto do something\u201d in the wake of the February tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left 17 dead and 17 others wounded.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you experience gun violence, there\u2019s a certain obligation within you, I think, to do something,\u201d said McLeod.<\/p>\n

Along with expanding the NFA to cover \u201cmilitary style weapons, bump stocks and other accessories\u2026\u201d students called for requiring gun dealers and owners to report stolen guns, mandatory 10-day waiting periods, criminalizing private transfers, banning adults under 21 from purchasing firearms, expanded licensing for gun ownership, safe storage laws, and red-flag confiscation orders for those deemed an \u201cextreme risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eighteen-year-old Briana Spainhour told The 74 that part of the students\u2019 mission is to quell the fears of those who may view the declaration as an infringement of the 2A.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they actually know what we\u2019re talking about, they know we\u2019re not trying to take away guns,\u201d said Spainhour, a California native who now attends college in D.C. Spainhour indicated that when it comes to confiscation, it applies to individuals who fit a certain category, e.g. convicted domestic abusers.<\/p>\n

While the students mentioned funding for \u201cschool-based safety and security initiatives\u201d and \u201cviolence intervention programs\u201d there was no explicit plan for arming school personnel or increasing the number of student resource officers.<\/p>\n

There was, however, a demand for \u201cimmediate access to qualified counselors in safe spaces\u201d and encouraging \u201call school personnel to foster positive relationships at all levels of education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Missing from the Bill of Rights was any estimation of cost, both in terms of hard dollars and manpower to ensure that these programs are fully and successfully implemented.<\/p>\n

Lily Eskelsen Garc\u00eda, the president of the country\u2019s largest teachers union, the National Education Association, applauded the teens for taking action.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are the legacy of civil rights champions who did not wait for someone to save them. They organized. They had leaders who came together, ordinary people who did extraordinary things for their times. These are extraordinary times. What you\u2019re doing is saying this thing that seems so special, shouldn\u2019t be special. It should be what we do every day,\u201d Garc\u00eda said to the students on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Along with Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety, NEA sponsored the event.<\/p>\n
